There are many pairings of “odd couples” in the animal world. We have all seen or heard of dog and cat best friends and many similar pairings. But this pair is a new one for the books. Thanks to the staff at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Bucks County, Pennsylvania these two neglected animals have found a better home.
Meet Waffles and Hemingway.
Hemingway is a goose and Waffles is a miniature horse who are the absolute best of friends. They have been through a lot together and are not going to let anything, or anyone, come between them.
They stand by one another and protect each other if the other thinks anyone is getting too close. Waffles is six years old but Heminway’s exact age is not known.
They came from a home of neglect.
Waffles and Heminway’s previous owners were charged with neglect after the pair, along with two peacocks and a dozen ducks, were found in terrible and “really filthy” conditions on a farm.
They were taken away from the home under warrant. They were treated by a veterinarian and were available for adoption once they had been given a clean bill of health. But the two’s friendship did not make it easy for the Bucks County SPCA staff.
“Hemingway can make kind of a fuss — slap his wings, honk at you — if he feels you’re going for Waffles. It makes it kind of challenging for the medical team,” explained Cindy Kelly.
They had to be adopted as a pair.
The two were rescued and were being cared for at the Bucks County SPCA. The pair was up for adoption at $300 but they had to go together. The shelter took extra care to vet applications and wants to know that their new owners understood their relationship and that they should not be kept just for fun in a backyard.
“If you want to adopt Waffles, you have to adopt Hemingway. And if you want to adopt Hemingway, you have to adopt Waffles. These animals were removed under a warrant from a farm. The conditions were not good,” explained Linda Reider.
The Bucks County SPCA received many applications to adopt the pair pouring in since the two were featured in the headlines.
The pair found their forever home.
The pair was adopted by Nick and Maddie who have been patient in getting their new family members accustomed to a new way of life. Maddie rehabs abused horses and is familiar with Waffle’s situation.
“I like it when I sort of have to let them figure out how to be a horse again and that’s what I’m most excited about with him. I think he just doesn’t even know he’s a horse. Maybe he thinks he’s a goose,” said Maddie.
No doubt that these best friends will spend a happy life together for the rest of their days.
