Animals can get up to all sorts at night while we’re asleep. If you’re a pet owner, you’ll know it’s the norm to head downstairs in the morning to discover the living room has been rearranged and one of your cushions has met its unfortunate end.

Little children are much the same. When the bedroom light goes off and the door gets shut, they still find ways to entertain themselves in the darkness. While your kids are unlikely to rip up your cushions, don’t put it past them to use their beds as trampolines and create midnight forts out of the most mundane of objects.

So when an animal and a child come together in the night, it only spells one thing: trouble.

Chris Cardinal and his wife are the proud owners of a cheeky pair of golden retrievers, named Colby and Bleu. When the family extended and little Chloe was born, Chris was a little apprehensive to introduce his dogs to his baby.

But he needn’t have worried. The dogs loved Chloe, and the three became the best of friends. Chloe soon learned that dropping crumbs of food off her highchair earned her even more love from the dogs, who, like most animals, would do anything for a sneaky bite of human food.

The only thing that concerned Chris was that his dogs were known to be troublemakers at night. Colby was especially cheeky – she had learned how to open doors, and Chris had installed video cameras so he could keep an eye on her antics.

Video footage was pretty damning: Colby can be seen opening the bathroom door and padding inside, swiftly followed by Bleu!

Now there was a baby in the house, Chris hoped that the dogs might behave themselves and set a good example during bedtime. But reality turned out very different.

Because the dogs now associated little Chloe with food, they started to disturb her in the early mornings when they were hungry. And then one morning, Chris left his room to discover Chloe casually walking around the house with the dogs. He explained:

“I think they figured they’d try the baby. They’ve snuck into her room before overnight once, but not for breakfast. (At the time, she wasn’t walking yet.) So, this is the first time it effected a prison break.”

Being still only a toddler, Chloe couldn’t possibly have opened her bedroom door herself. Which led Chris to the logical solution: Chloe wasn’t the responsible party here. It had to be Colby.

Chris put his detective hat on and began to investigate the scene of the crime. He looked back at his reliable video footage for the answers he was already certain of.

The crime started at 6:05 AM, when Chloe was tucked up in bed, fast asleep.

The footage shows Colby and Bleu running straight over to Chloe’s bed and waking her up. Chloe, looking over the moon at this early wake-up call, stands up on her bed, grinning at her partners in crime.

After disappearing for a moment, the dogs return, as if to ask, “Come on, what’s taking so long?” And Chloe casually gets out of bed and toddles off with the dogs.

According to Chris, the cheeky golden retriever pair knew exactly what they were doing. While he and his wife would be far from happy to be woken up by the dogs, little Chloe would have loved the thrill of sneaking off with them in the early morning to feed them any treats she could get her hands on.
