Donald Glover is known for his performance as Troy on the show “Community” as well as his work as a standup comedian. Since branching out into the world of music, he’s also become known in his musical persona as Childish Gambino, with hits like Redbone, This is America, and Sweatpants. In his 20s, Glover also wrote for 30 Rock.
But now he’s also become an unofficial spokesperson for Girl Scout cookies.
Okay, not exactly. But back in Feb. 2018, a little girl named Charity Joy Harrison used a parody of Childish Gambino’s Redbone to spread the word about her cookie sales.
Selling cookies isn’t as easy as you might think.
Charity’s dad Seymour Harrison Jr. filmed the little girl in the car and posted it on his Facebook page to raise awareness. They did a little bit more than just catch the attention of local family and friends — instead, they went viral.
Even Glover himself became aware of the video after several people forwarded it to him.
He spoke about it during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
“Childish Gambino’s for the children, man,” Glover joked. “It’s beautiful, but it’s also crazy to me …I was never like, ‘I’ll make this and then one day a little girl will sell Girl Scout cookies to it.”
He was especially interested in Charity after learning she was from Atlanta.
Glover himself grew up in Stone Mountain, Georiga, a suburb of the capital.
“It’s pretty great,” said Glover. “A lot of people sent that to me. I was really touched. I would actually really like to buy some from her.”
Of course, Colbert was quick to respond to that. As it turned out, Charity and her dad were special guests for the evening. They joined the pair onstage, Charity wearing her Girl Scout uniform. She passed Glover a cookie brochure, which he immediately opened.
Charity was sweet, shy, and tiny, perched on her dad’s lap.
As she sat down, there was an audible chorus of “Awe’s” from the audience.
There are plenty of choices for Girl Scout cookies, but Glover was quick to choose a favorite. When he found out that Charity was 113 boxes short of her goal of selling 5,000 cookies, he put in a bulk order.
“This says ‘My cookie goal is 113,’” said Glover. “Yeah, I’ll take ‘em all. You guys want cookies? Obviously Thin Mints, those are the best — you can put them in the refrigerator.”
And Glover wasn’t the only one who’d be getting cookies.
Colbert had come prepared with a basket full of Thin Mints, which he and Charity began to distribute.
“Charity, we actually have Thin Mints right here,” said Colbert. “Would you like to give them out to the audience? Come on, let’s make some people happy.”
They did make some people happy that night, but it was Glover’s own generosity that made a little Girl Scout happy, too!
