Unfortunately, we live in a world in which dog abuse stories are all too common. Every day, we hear about dogs who are abandoned in puppy shelters by long-time owners; dogs who are abused and kicked out to the streets; dogs who shy away from a human’s touch because the only interaction they’re familiar with is negative interaction. While all dog abuse stories are tragic, Gina’s story is unbearable.
Gina is a mix breed Boxer who makes her home in Athens, Greece. Before she found love in her current owners, Gina was one of those unfortunate many who belonged to an abusive owner. However, the kind of abuse Gina experienced goes above and beyond the typical cruelty.
Gina spent her entire life chained in a yard, never permitted off the chain to roam freely. To make matters worse, her owner beat her daily. During the winter, Gina gave birth to a litter of puppies. Sadly, because she was unable to move her puppies out of the rain and to a safe, dry space, her puppies drowned in a puddle of mud.
Neighbors knew what was going on beyond the fence, and they tried to get authorities to step in. After three years of being abused by day and crying out for help at night, the Greek authorities finally intervened and removed Gina from her abuser’s clutches. According to the police reports, the house was full of Gina’s blood, with old and new stains coating the carpet, walls, and furniture. Even more sickening, the monster was never prosecuted, and not even banned from owning a dog again.
Fortunately, however, Gina made her way into a new and loving home, where she is given the kind of affection she deserves.
The happy ending isn’t that Gina found a new home though.
When out on a walk with her person, Mary, one day, Gina discovered a mother cat and her babies next to a garbage can. Some other cruel owner had abandoned the pregnant feline and left her to fend for herself. Gina called attention to the family and Mary scooped them up and brought them home too. Now, Gina, the cat family, and Mary all live happily together under one roof.
Lucy, the mama cat, was adopted by Mary and will spend the rest of her life with Gina. The kittens, however, will go up for adoption via the SCARS agency, when they’re two months old, which is just in a few short days!
