You can heat as much shower water as you need using only a stove, some sticks, and a routing system. The process does take longer than warming water with electricity – but hey, sometimes we don’t have a choice. And other times we want to conserve energy or cut down on our power bills. This life hack is the solution that meets all of those needs.
This process, known as a thermosyphoning process, can be thought of as a natural heat exchange. Almost no energy is wasted when heating your water, which is good news for the earth.
The heating process works when you place a large coil inside a stove pipe. Light kindling inside the stove, and nurture a little fire. Both ends of the coil should come out through holes drilled in the stove pipe. Water rises through the hot coil, gathering heat as it makes its way to the water heater. Copper tubing connects the coil and the container.
This ingenious contraption takes water from the water heater, warms it up, and sends it right back. The best part of this project is that you don’t need to spend a crazy amount of money on all sorts of specific parts. The whole thing can be made from scraps – actually, the engineer in this video used scarp parts himself.
