Families often worry about keeping big dogs at home, especially when they have children. Although, that could be a misconception since big dog breeds usually have a gentler temperament than smaller dog breeds.

German Shepherds are great at herding or grouping farm livestock, hence the name. They are the best dogs to protect and keep your animals away from danger. At home, they could also be efficient guard dogs because they are alert, quick on their feet, and brave dogs. However, a German shepherd named Thorin isn’t used to herd big cows, but he is guarding the house and taking care of baby chicks. It started when Thorin’s owner decided to introduce newly hatched chicks to Thorin.

You can see how gentle this German Shepherd could be.

Thorin loved the tiny birds. He happily watched over them as they took their tiny steps on the carpet. Thorin was pretty excited after his owner grabbed the chicks out of the incubator. He followed her everywhere until her mom placed them to roam on the carpet.

As the chicks were placed on the carpet, Thorin was ready to interact with them.

The dog carefully examined the baby chicks one by one even when they were still in his owner’s hands. Afterwards, he searched for a place to sit and look at the baby chicks in peace.

The chicks seem to like Thorin as well, and while they are running around the carpet, they would freely run along Thorin’s big furry tail without worries. Thorin made sure that the chicks wouldn’t go farther away from each other and nudged them gently to the center. The baby chicks were unafraid of the big pooch and it’s just heartwarming looking at them.

The chicks might have recognized Thorin as their mother.

When the chicks finished exploring, they cozied themselves on Thorin’s big paws. It was as if the chicks already decided that the big dog was their mother. Thorin welcomes them all to warm up on his thick fur until they fell asleep.

The wholesome clip instantly captured the heart of the people on the internet.

At first glance, you would certainly be afraid that the dog might chomp them, however, if you watch the video until the end, the gentle dog remains calm and protective to the defenseless chicks.

Animals have their way of determining who they could be friends with, and surprisingly, there are rare occasions where they even dismiss the fact that they are both prey and predator. However, the owner should still take extra precautions in cases like these.

It may be hard to believe that a dog and baby chicks could be friends but just as cats and dogs aren’t impossible to make up, dogs and baby chicks are not far from this wholesome possibility. After watching Thorin’s relationship with the baby chicks, you could say unlikely friendships like theirs happen all the time.
