When it comes to the living room, you want the softest, most comfortable furniture you can have. After all, this is where you will spend a good deal of time, and it is probably where you will be sitting should you entertain guests. So having a full supply of furniture is pretty essential.
Unfortunately, it can also be super expensive. Buying new furniture is not for those on a budget. Each piece comes with its own outrageous price; on top of that, it needs to fit in with the rest of the room. This can make furniture shopping SO difficult.
Even if you find the perfect piece, it may not be in the right color. Sure, you can have it reupholstered, but this is expensive. Not to mention you will be stuck waiting and wondering when your furniture will be ready rather than enjoying it. Buying new furniture can be fun, but it certainly isn’t for everyone.
Josie Stroffolino is one such person. She does not enjoy spending her hard-earned savings on simple living room supplies. In her efforts to get out of doing this she has gotten super creative. Her latest furniture hack is pure genius.
Recently Josie found herself wandering around Kmart. She wasn’t there for anything specific; she just wanted to see what was in stock. As a thrifty and crafty person, Josie likes to be inventive when it comes to her shopping. It is for this reason that she is a part of the Facebook group titled Kmart Hacks & Decor.
As she was exploring the store, a stack of dog beds caught her eye. Josie didn’t have a dog, so she wasn’t exactly compelled to purchase the beds. But then the lightbulb went off. She could user her clever crafting to turn these beds into something marvelous.
“I was roaming around Kmart and couldn’t get [past] these velvet dog beds. I absolutely loved the color and the shape, as they match my home decor, but had no use for them. After some thought, I realized for the price, only $9.50 a piece, it wouldn’t hurt to buy a couple and have a play with them,” Josie told Mamamia.
So she purchased the beds and took them home with her. Once she had them in her clutches, the ideas started flowing. The ingenious woman knew just what she would do, so she pulled out her sewing needle and got to work.
She turned those two useless dog beds into a beautiful ottoman that went perfectly with her home. The velvet material that covered them was so soft and comfortable – it made the perfect material for a new piece of living room furniture. And I must say, even though this ottoman was made up of pet products, it looks very similar to an expensive one that you might find in stores.
“I unpicked the the black liner bottoms of each of two beds, removed the stuffing out of each and sewed the two velvet ends together,” Josie shared in her thrifty Facebook group. “Leaving a small hole, I then re-stuffed the ottoman with its original stuffing. Finally, I closed up the hole – it only took a few hours and the piece ended up better than I could have imagined!”
Josie set her new masterpiece on the carpet, right next to a cushy-looking chair. The work was complete, and it was worth every moment she had spent sewing it together.
If you were to walk into her home, you would never know that the ottoman was a $20 DIY project – it’s that good. Josie is one expert crafter, but her method is simple enough that the rest of us have a shot at mastering it too.
Why pay more when you can get a great product for a fraction of the price? If you are willing to put in the work, you could have something stunning on your hands without breaking your bank account.
