A California-based woman had a massive surprise, and a nearly ruined lunch, when she nearly stabbed a small frog while eating a prepackaged salad from Target she had purchased earlier in the day. While most people would find that the frog and salad were no longer desirable, this woman found a new pet instead.

The woman, Becky Garfinkel, is a strict vegetarian who was enjoying her salad when she looked down and realized a small frog was in the Spring Mix she had purchased earlier. The moment was quite a surprise!

“I was going to stab at it and take a bite, and I see it … and I scream,” she said.

Freaked out by the entire situation, she ran to the bathroom and threw up everything she had eaten for dinner thus far. It was during that time that her husband realized that the frog was still alive, although very much doused in lemon-vinaigrette.

Her husband rushed to the kitchen sink, where he cleaned the frog. He was cold and stiff, and the Garfinkel family seemed unsure if the frog would survive. In a final effort to help the frog, her husband decided to rub its belly, something he had seen helps frogs.

From there, it didn’t seem right to just let the frog back out into the wild. Considering all that it must have been through, the frog deserved a second chance at a happy, safe life.

The dime sized amphibian was named Lucky, and the family decided to keep him as a tiny pet. He now lives in a “reptile terrarium with moss, crickets, worms and a bowl, and placed it in her office,” according to the LA Times.

Garfinkel has reached out to both Target and the salad-producing company, Taylor Farms, about the incident. Target has offered her a $5.00 gift card and Taylor Farms has launched a full investigation into the events that must have occurred for a frog to have gotten into their final product.

As for Lucky, he’s now a part of Garfinkel’s and their animal-friendly family, where he can live out his days in peace.

“He survived so much,” she concluded about the entire experience. “I am just happy he survived and I didn’t eat him.”
