Sometimes when you hear stories about random acts of kindness, you hear about how the recipient decided to pay it forward.
But not to the person who originally showed them the act of kindness.
But that’s what two New Jersey firefighters did after a waitress showed them some love and appreciation by paying for their breakfast.
Burlington County firefighters Tim Young and Paul Higgins were discussing the 12-hour shift they just finished where they battled a mighty fire that broke out in a North Brunswick warehouse.
The two were enjoying their breakfast at around 5 a.m. at the Route 130 Diner in Delran when waitress Liz Woodward overheard their conversation.
“When it came time for the bill, we flipped it over and she decided to comp it on her own,” Young, who is with the Mt. Holly Fire Department, told ABC 6.
The note really touched Hullings’ heart.
“I started tearing up and it made me feel good – us firefighters are wanted, people care about us,” said Hullings, who is with the Hainseport Fire Department.
Here’s what the note on their bill read:
“Your breakfast is on me today. Thank you, all that you do, for serving us and for running into the places everyone runs away from. No matter your role, you are courageous, brave and strong. Thank you for being bold every day. Fueled by fire and driven by courage – what an example you are. Get some rest!”
She even drew a cute little picture of a firefighter’s axe. How sweet!
Young posted the note on Facebook where it got an overwhelming response. The post has since been taken down or set to private.
“I know it’s been remarked as this extraordinary act,
Woodard said insisting that it was not. “It’s small a little gesture.”
The bill was only $15 but the firefighters were so grateful that they are trying to raise money for her family so they can purchase a wheelchair accessible van for her father who was paralyzed by a brain aneurysm five years ago.
The Mt. Laurel woman started a GoFundMe for the family which had raised $30,000 of the $80,000 goal so far, but the firefighters said that they are going to help her raise even more.
“If we have to do a fundraiser. We’ll do whatever we can to help,” Hullings said.
Woodard said she was overwhelmed with gratitude.
“I don’t even know what to say to that,” she said. “That’s incredible – what a way to wake up today. I had no idea today was going to go like this.”
Now that fund is up to $86,210.You can make a donation to the family here.
