They say that no good deed goes unpunished— and Zack Randolph is learning it firsthand.
On July 2nd, 2017, Zack is working at Great American Cookies in the Katy Mills Mall in Katy, Texas.
During his shift, an officer who also works in the mall approaches the food stand, looking to order a cheesecake brownie.
Wanting to show appreciation for the officer’s work, the thoughtful teen offers to pay for his dessert.
He explains to Fox 26:
“He’s just a really nice guy, and on top of that, he has a badge. That’s enough for me to buy him something. That’s the least I can do.”
So, the teen pays for the officer’s dessert using $2.75 from his own pocket. “I didn’t even use the employee discount, full price,’ he says.
Unfortunately, a man and woman in line behind the officer do not appreciate Zack’s goodwill. They begin making a scene, telling him they want a free dessert too.
Zack describes how things began to get out of hand, saying, “He put his daughter down and came to the side and was about to come back and come at me and thankfully my assistant manager and my coworker stopped him.”
When all is said and done, Zack is suspended from work because of the incident.
Zack’s mother Tami is shocked that her son has been reprimanded for doing a good deed. She takes to Facebook, writing, in part:
“Since when does buying a police officer a cookie give anyone else a reason to attack someone. And when did a corporation want to FIRE someone for being KIND?”
Since it was posted on July 5th, 2017, Tami’s Facebook post has been shared almost 11,000 times and has garnered over 10,000 comments.
Although Great American Cookies’ corporate office claims that Zack’s suspension was an error made at the store-level, both corporate and the Katy Mills Mall locations have made statements apologizing and retracting all punishments.
To try and make it up to both Zack and the public, the Katy Mills Mall location even hold a “free cookie” day for all officers, members of the military, and first responders.
Unfortunately, judging from the post‘s comments, people are still a bit angry about the whole debacle.
Zack, on the other hand, has made many new fans as a result of his kindness— even getting a personal “thank you” from the Katy Police Department.
In a photo posted to their Facebook on July 12th, 2017, the Katy Police Department writes:
“Sergeant McClure and the rest of the Katy Police Department would like to say thank you for supporting law enforcement and going the extra step to show your appreciation.”
Despite all the drama and consequences, Zack says he would do it again in a heartbeat.
