When this feral cat was rescued, he was completely miserable. His rescuers thought it didn’t get any better – until something amazing happened. He met some kittens of his own, and suddenly this cat let love back in his heart.
Mason is an older cat who is accustomed to life in the wild. He lived on a sprawling rural farm with 60 other feral cats, and he was content. Unfortunately, fate had other plans for him.
When a developer bought the land where Mason lived, all the cats had to be removed. The new owner said he would allow the cats to re-inhabit the space when it was complete, but it was too dangerous to have kitties running around in the midst of all the construction. He allowed the rescue group TinyKittens to trap, neuter, and release the cats.
Once the project was finished, Mason had intended to return to the farm like the rest of his friends. But that just wasn’t in the cards for this old cat. TinyKittens found that Mason was quite sick. He would need help just to stay alive.
The poor cat had a growth on his paw and advanced kidney disease. On top of that, his tail was broken in several places. Mason was in bad shape, and his rescuers wanted to help him.
“Instead of euthanasia, we felt he deserved to live his sunset months in comfort, free from pain,” TinyKittens explained in their video. They brought the cat in to experience domestic life.
Mason moved in with a TinyKittens staff member, who took excellent care of him. The cat was safe, but he wasn’t happy. He would hiss at anyone who came near him. After spending a lifetime in the wild, Mason thought of humans more as predators than as friends.
Time went by and his demeanor didn’t change. “We thought that was as good as it could get for this magnificent former feral,” shared TinyKittens, “and then we brought home some foster kittens and something remarkable happened.”
Another staff member had found a litter of kittens outside his house, so he brought them over to meet Mason. The employees were worried that the feral cat would harm the kittens. Then the unexpected happened.
Mason loved these little kittens as his own. He let them crawl all over him, he ran around the house with them, and he snuggled up next to them as they slept. He became their adoptive grandfather.
The TinyKittens employees were amazed. This cat – who had rejected all forms of human contact – was completely in love with these kittens. He nurtured them and taught them important feline skills. No one could believe such a grumpy cat could be so full of love and compassion.
Mason’s health has gotten much better since meeting his new family. As he and the kittens grow together, they show the world that no heart is too hard for love.
