Nobody ever could have guessed that face masks would become the unwelcome trend of 2020. Now that we’ve all accepted that face coverings will remain an essential until COVID-19 goes away for good, many of us have hunted for a fashionable face mask in the same way we would for a jacket or an umbrella.
For the creatives in our society, the new face mask trend has given them an opportunity to make their own personal designs that really reflect who they are. We’ve seen all sorts of wacky inventions recently – but one of the best has got to be from car salesman Steve Montgomery.
Steve, who lives in San Antonio, Texas, has an enviable collection of suits and ties that he wears every day to work. His appearance is important in his job, and he couldn’t bear the thought of having to wear a face mask that didn’t match the rest of his outfit.
So, much to his daughter Kiana’s distress, Steve enlisted in the help of his girlfriend to turn the pocket squares that came with his ties into face masks. The resulting mask-tie combinations are oddly satisfying.
Kiana played her role of embarrassed daughter well, sharing a post of her dad with his matching masks and ties to Twitter with the caption “Dad….. whyyyyy”, and the face-palm emoji.

Little did Kiana or her dad know that her post was about to go viral, big time. In just a couple of weeks, it was retweeted more than 80K times and liked nearly 700K times, and had more than 5K comments.
Not only did people find her dad’s mask and tie combos hilarious, there were others who thought it was a genuinely great idea and were inspired to make their own. Some people even wanted to know whether they could share Kiana’s dad, or whether he was single.
Since her original post, Steve saw that he now had one of the greatest responsibilities in society to continue producing his matching mask-tie ensembles. Kiana shared a photo of Steve’s impressive tie collection lying out on the side, ready for their pocket squares to be turned into face masks. His poor girlfriend is probably regretting the day she helped him start a trend.
It wasn’t long until Kiana updated her Twitter audience with more photos of Steve wearing matching ties and face masks. With purple diamonds, blue paisley print and even a black and yellow bumblebee stripe effect, Steve really does have all the ties – and now he has all the face masks to match.
Speaking to Bored Panda about the viral response to her Tweet, Kiana said she still couldn’t believe how popular her dad had become, but added:
“I wasn’t surprised that people loved it, though, it really was a great idea.”
According to Kiana, Steve thought that a lot of the face masks he saw were generic, and he wanted to stand out with his own.
How long he’ll be the lone mask and tie matcher, though, is unknown. People are already coming forward to show off their own matching mask and tie combos, with one person showing off a nifty bow tie and mask, and someone else showing off a mask that matches their sweater.
There’s definitely something visually pleasing about a person’s face mask matching with various parts of their outfits. We expect all the big retailers to catch onto Steve’s ingenious idea within the hour. But he can always say he did it first.
