As the weeks continue to turn into months in isolation, we’ve relied more and more on each other to get through. Whether we are challenging other families to a dance-off, showing each other different workouts, or even cooking recipes to remain healthy the list goes on as we’ve taken to the internet to stay connected with each other. However, there are many among us who are struggling to get by and too vulnerable to go outside. Those who are immune-compromised, as well as, elderly are bound indoors living with increased fear of the virus and loneliness.
In London, a 72-year-old lady who lives alone left a note taped to a lobby door requesting help from her neighbors asking if they could spare any books or DVDs for her.
Fortunately for her, she has some pretty great neighbors to grant her wishes by dropping off goods at her door without hesitation.
The 72-year-old woman was so touched and appreciative that she left a second note this time thanking everyone for their kindness and generosity. Writing that although it will take her a while to get through everything she’ll leave the DVDs and books on their shared table in the lobby for everyone to enjoy. Something so simple yet so touching. The woman writing at the bottom of her thank you note,
“PS You have saved an old birds sanity.”
One of her neighbors, Connie Bliff, saw the note and decided to share this heartwarming moment with the world via twitter. The post went viral immediately with currently 68.2K retweets and 495.6k likes. Touching hearts around the world and reminding each of us how special simple kind gestures for one another can be in difficult times. The world not only sharing and liking this post but giving recognition and sharing their own thoughts about this moment.
It can be easy for us to each slide into our own fears in isolation and loneliness but its little reminders such as these that let us know we are all struggling and can get through this together. Especially helping those in our community who cannot afford groceries, seeing what we can do to help those who are immune-compromised and for our elderly. Specifically in Europe, the head of the World Organization Office, Hans Kluge, encouraging youth to look into helping the elders who surround them in an online press conference stating,
“Supporting and protecting older people living alone in the community is everyone’s business.”
During the conference, Kluge made sure to note while we all are finding different ways to stay socially connected we need to remember that some of our older generations do not have access to these digital platforms. Kluge going on to state,
“Remeber, we leave no one behind…Physical distancing is not social distancing”
Those who are elderly, immune-compromised, or struggling to put food on the table need access to a variety of supplies whether it be medicine, food, diapers or even books and DVDs to remain sane. As isolation continues, may those of us who have extra or the opportunity to help fulfill our duties to do what we can to assist those who are vulnerable throughout our time in lockdown.
