Back when we were still in school, we’ve seen numerous marching band performances at school events, sports events, some school programs, and many more. Their lively and stunning performances were meant to hype up the crowd as they enthusiastically perform for everyone.
But have you ever seen a high-energy drumline performance?
By definition, drumline is a section of percussion instruments usually played as part of marching and ensemble. Examples of this are of course high school and college marching bands, drill and drum corps, drum and bugle corps, and indoor percussion ensemble.
It’s also not just a set of drums since the percussion section of the band consists of a snare line, tenor line, and a bass line.
It’s way more intense and complicated than you think.
Drumline is solely responsible for the rhythm flow of the whole ensemble. In order to master the drum routine, a player must learn basic grip and strokes, posture and carrier adjustment, the heigh system, timing, two height control and rolls, marching techniques, and so much more.
Not only that, but they also need to master timing, coordination, power, synchronization, and of course a keen sense of hearing.
Just to give you an idea of how extreme drumline can get, the Bluecoats School of the Arts shared a glimpse of their usual routine in a rehearsal video.
Back in 2013, these students uploaded a video where we can see them all lined up in three groups. Each group was handling a different type of drum but all did an amazing performance even at the start.
Their breathtaking drumrolls and stunts were truly remarkable. The students all had excellent posture as they expertly maintain the rhythm and melody. Each of them had 100% focus on the routine just so they can avoid missing a beat.
Oh, and did we mention that they were just warming up?
Their coach and choreographer must also be truly amazing for coming up with these complex routines. Training and guiding the team is one thing, but comping up with an original and exceptional routine is another!
Viewers surely had their minds blown as the video gained more than 8 million views. Some of the comments were:
“This gives a whole new meaning to look at the flick of the wrist. This drumline is on point.”
“Wow it’s awesome… I’ve never seen something so perfect and so coordinated. It deserves a little hand up… all because it’s incredible.”
“Paradise can be felt on earth by listening you. Great boys.”
“I’m from Baltimore and marching bands is what we do but this right here was 🔥 some of the best drumming I seen.”
In fact, since drumlines are literally the backbone of the whole band, they’ve been given solo division to showcase their passion and dedication to the craft. They bring nothing but excitement and banging beats that can definitely liven up the crowd.
Don’t forget to watch their amazing performance below!
