Kitchen islands are useful storage pieces, but they can also be pricey too. Instead, why not create your own beautiful island at home by repurposing an old dresser?
This DIY is simple, low-cost, and has stunning results. If youโre ready to give your kitchen a pop โ then follow the easy steps below!
Time to head to the thrift store.
First things first, you need to select a dresser to become your new kitchen island. Perhaps you have one sitting in your garage or attic, but if not โ youโll find plenty in your local second-hand shop.

Remove all the dresser drawers.
Start by taking out all of the drawers and setting them aside. Keep in mind, youโll be using one (or more) of them later.
Now, youโll be doing some sanding.
With a palm sander and fine-grit sandpaper, give the entire dresser a good once over. In the video, the woman wants to remove the clear coat and scratches on hers โ so sheโs keeping it light.
However, if yours needs more work, she provided a tip.
โIf youโre trying to remove several coats of paint on your dresser you many want to try a heavier grit sandpaper and add a little more pressure when sanding.โ
Hereโs where youโll do some painting.
After selecting the color that bests fits your kitchenโs decor (she uses paint and primer all-in-one), get out a brush and get to work! Do one coat of paint on the entire dresser (besides the top if you want to do a two-toned piece). After itโs fully dry, give it a second coat.
Add a clear coat to the top surface.
Since the woman desired an island that had a wood finish on top, she painted a clear coat of Minwax Polycrylic in long even strokes. She recommends using a sponge brush to avoid streaking.
Bring back the dresser drawers.
The Hometalk representative wanted to use one of the drawers for her island. So, she sanded and painted it just like the dresser. If you desire more drawers for your kitchen piece, complete the steps on as many as youโll use.
Letโs get some final touches.
With some new handles and the drawer spaces converted into shelves, the womanโs repurposed dresser is now a gorgeous kitchen island! By leaving the one drawer, she also has a great space for smaller storage.
Itโs hard to believe that not long before it was a drab piece of furniture from a thrift shop. Who says you have to spend a lot to make your place look dynamite?
