When this donut shop owner’s wife was recovering from a brain aneurysm, it spread like wildfire through social media. Now something miraculous is happening.
After a humble shop owner in Seal Beach, California, John Chan, refused to let customers start a go-fund-me page for him. A patron in the community took to social media and spread the word, telling people they could help out by buying him out. That way he’d have time to spend with his recovering wife.
“We wanted to offer John some money, but he’s a proud man and didn’t want to take it. So I said, let’s just come here every morning, but his inventory out early so he can go home and be with his wife.” Said one customer, Marc Loopesko.
Soon people from all over were coming to show their support!
Thanks to social media, it wasn’t just the local community that got the message and wanted to help. Before Chan knew it people from as far as Hawaii were in his donut shop buying him out before dawn! One customer who was there to show his support said he got the word the way from Hawaii!
“My daughter and her husband are stationed in Hawaii in the military, and she got a hold of us and said we needed to come down and support this family.” Said Joe Flannagan.
The donut blitz has the shop selling out by 6:45 AM! Leaving the owner plenty of time to spend with his recovering wife.
The support from the community is unwavering. Every morning, the lines out the door with customer after customer, buying donuts by the dozens. John Chan sells out his complete daily inventory in just over 3 hours! Although Chan didn’t want to take any hand out’s, he’s loving the spike in business!
“It’s very busy, but i don’t mind, I like it!” Said Chan. He also said: “I just want to say thank you very much, for the neighbors all coming to me, they’re helping me very much.”
The shop owners have been serving the community since 1990, so they feel it’s their duty to help the dedicated family.
Many of the customers see them and their shop as a staple in the community. They immigrated from Cambodia and opened the shop in 1990, they’ve been serving donuts ever since!
“Yeah, they’re national treasures here in Seal Beach, they’ve got 28 years right here, they’re great people.” Said Tim Wrigly, a long-time customer.
