These days most people wear tights or leggings with their dresses and skirts, making pantyhose a trend of the past, so what are you supposed to do with those snagged pantyhose in the back of your sock drawer? Definitely don’t throw it out! Why toss it when you can repurpose it for other household use? Here are 10 ways to recycle your pantyhose:
1. Homemade insect repellent
Grill and bonfire season may be winding down, but a good tip to keep the bugs away is to make a homemade bug repellent. Cut one leg of off of a pair of tights and tie one end shut. Pour in dried lavender into this make-shift bag and sew, twist or tie it closed. Put a few drops of eucalyptus or lemongrass essential oil on it for more fragrance and stronger effect. This little life hack will be sure to keep those moths and mosquitos away from your next campfire!
2. Vacuum Attachment
Are you tired of losing pennies between couch cushions? Did you drop that favorite earring on the carpet and can’t seem to find it? Slip your tights over the end of your vacuum cleaner hose and tie a rubber band around it. That way it will suck up anything you may have missed without the important things making their way all the way into the vacuum bag.
3. Paint Brush Holder
Painting is a messy chore, and having to leave the brush on the side of the can creates drips and a bigger cleanup. Sure, paintbrush holders exist, but why would you want to spend money on something so simple that you can create yourself? Simply wrap the pantyhose over the lid of the paint can and- voila! The nylon fabric will keep the brush from sticking to the sides and the stretch makes it easy to tie around the can, making this the easiest pantyhose hack.
4. Thread
The stretchy nylon fabric that pantyhose is made of can be very durable. By cutting your tights into strips, you can create long strands to use for just about anything like tie-rugs, finger knitting and more.
5. Broom Cover
Want to add years to the life of your broom? Slip the foot of your pantyhose over the end, and cut off the extra. The stretchy durable fabric still allows your broom to be flexible while it collects dirt, without wearing down or dirtying up the broom head. Plus, sweeping up long pet hairs and dust bunnies will be easy now that it won’t get stuck in the bristles!
6. Camera Filter
Ever photo nowadays isn’t complete without the perfect filter. Create this gauze lens by pulling a piece of your tights over the zoom lens of your camera and tying, or rubber banding, it in place. With the tights over your lens, it creates an aged, dreamy look without having to do any retouching on your computer.
7. Reusable Cotton Ball
When removing nail polish, you can probably go through 20 cotton balls. If you replaced the cotton with the nylon pantyhose, you would remove all that waste! When balled up, the pantyhose can be super absorbent and more effective at scrubbing away paint with its fine mesh texture.
8. Soap on a Rope
So you’ve used all but the last sliver of a bar of soap… collect these useless slivers and throw them into the foot of your tights to create soap on a rope. Not only does it combine all the somewhat useless scraps left behind from your bar of soap, but now the pantyhose acts as a washcloth or loofa as well.
9. Closet deodorizer
Cut off the foot of your pantyhose, and like the insect repellent, pour in your favorite scent of potpourri. Tie off the top and hang it in your closet out of sight to keep your clothes smelling fresh. This is great for teenagers with smelly feet or overused gym bags thrown into the back of your closet.
10. Clean Hairbrush
Tired of trying to clean your hair out of your hairbrush? Cut out a square of your tights big enough to cover the bristles of your brush. Then stretch it over the top of them and down to the base of the bristles (using a bobby pin or pen helps to poke the bristles through). When it’s time to clean the brush, pulling up the piece of pantyhose will bring all the hair with it.
