Dogs trust their humans more than anything in the world, and so, it’s always heartbreaking when an owner breaks that trust by abandoning their dog. Sadly, there are times when an owner loves their dog but simply can’t keep them anymore. In that case, the responsible thing to do is to bring a dog to a shelter.
Unfortunately, though, some dogs aren’t given this courtesy.
Luckily, the story we’re about to share has a happy ending — but to see the impact that being abandoned had on one dog is truly devastating, so you might want to have some tissues handy!
Our story begins in Dallas with a sweet little pooch named Camilla. Camilla’s parents were in the process of moving house, and they left piles of trash outside their property for the trash men to come and take away.
The pile was full of old belongings and things that the family didn’t need anymore. Camilla was one of these things.
The poor dog had been discarded like a piece of rubbish, literally amongst all of the trash outside of her house. Her owners had such little care for her well-being that they hadn’t even left their dog any food or water. All she had for comfort was her blanket.
Instead of trying to find food or a sheltered area, the loyal pup stayed on her blanket, waiting for her owners to return.
Dogs are only used to giving love, so Camilla is probably struggling to comprehend why her family would have left her.
But they never came back.
Camilla was spotted on New Year’s Day by Marina Tarashevska, co-founder of the animal rights organization Dallas DogRRR.
The poor little thing was still huddled up on her blanket, shivering in the cold. She hadn’t yet given up hope that her family was going to return to her.
“It was really cold and rainy, and the dog was lying on her blanket — and she wouldn’t leave it,” Patti Dawson, executive director of Dallas DogRRR, told The Dodo. “I think she was still thinking her family would come back. She was in that stage of, ‘I’ll just wait here. This is familiar.’”
Marina spoke to some neighbors in the area and received confirmation that Camilla had indeed been abandoned. She now had the job of rescuing the pup.
Rescuing the pup was a tricky process. She was frightened of strangers and probably reluctant to leave without her family.
But the two women worked tirelessly to help rescue Camilla, and eventually, they were able to get her safely into a kennel. The poor thing was still terrified.
“She basically was curled up into a ball in the back of the crate,” Patti said. “You could touch her, but she was frozen in fear. Wouldn’t make eye contact, kept her head down. If you got close to her, she would put her head into the back of the kennel, like, ‘Don’t look at me, don’t make eye contact with me, don’t touch me. Stay away.’”
The poor little thing had injuries on her neck, which the vet suggested could have been from a fight with another dog. Although Camilla is still learning to trust people, she’s now in a much happier place than when she was abandoned outside her house.
“She’s doing great. Her personality is slowly coming out, and she’s starting to trust,” Patti told The Dodo.
Thankfully, Camilla’s story has a happy ending!
Camilla spent a few months in the shelter, learning how to trust again. But finally, once she was ready, she was put up for adoption, and she found her forever home. We’re so glad Camilla now has a wonderful place to call home.
