Running by the beach is an activity where you don’t expect to see much other than the beautiful shoreline and people enjoying the waves. However, this man saw more than he anticipated when a dog playing by the shore caught his attention. It looked like the dog was having fun chasing after something and when he saw what was making the dog excited he knew he had to capture the moment immediately!

YouTube uploader Brett H was walking along the shore on a beach in Rockingham when he spotted a lone figure swimming leisurely in the ocean.

It looked like a kid from afar and so he decided to get closer to figure out exactly what it was.

As he drew closer he realized that the lone figure was actually a golden retriever. It wasn’t anything unusual at first, since dogs typically enjoy swimming in the water, but what he saw next truly made the encounter exceptional!

Another figure was swimming near the dog and the YouTuber could only marvel at the amazing sight before him.

He instantly focused his camera at the dog and waited for the other creature to show up.

And finally, when the other swimmer surfaced from the water, the YouTuber could only gasp in amazement.

Why? Because he was seeing a dolphin swimming and interacting next to the dog! That’s certainly something you don’t see every day, right?

The dolphin was swimming in and out of the water and it seemed as though it was teasing the dog to try to play. The dog was playfully chasing the dolphin and could not take his eyes away from bizarre sea creature it’d likely never seen before.

They seemed to be circling each other and from an onlooker’s point of view, the two seemed to be interacting and playing with each other. I know it sounds unbelievable but seeing the way they moved together, you simply can’t ignore the fact that they look like they’re having a great time!

More than once the two animals came close to each other and it was the most incredible sight. We rarely see this kind of interaction and to be honest, some are skeptical about why the two animals were seen together. Were they really playing or was it something else?

Seeing a dolphin swim so close to shore is often times a normal occurrence when strolling along the beach, but seeing it interact so closely with another animal is rare. Especially a dog. That’s why a lot of people online are unsure whether it was there to play or if the dolphin went near shore unintentionally. Dr. Justin Gregg, writer of the book Are Dolphins Really Smart? sees this type of behavior as not so concerning.

“It doesn’t look listless or about to strand,” he says. “The dolphin appears to be circling the dog, which should mean it’s not too unhappy. Otherwise it would just swim away.”

Professor Lars Bejder from the Murdoch University Cetacean Research Unit, another expert on dolphins, agrees with Dr. Justin. He believes the most likely reason that the dolphin was ashore is because it was in search of tasty fish.

Although the interaction between the dolphin and the golden retriever cannot be confirmed as “playing”, it can be easily assumed that they shared a mutual curiosity for each other.

Dolphins on the shores of Rockingham aren’t exactly rare and when this particular dolphin met a furry canine swimming alone it probably couldn’t fight the urge to go near it to investigate. Curiosity is a powerful thing.

Whatever it was that sparked the interaction between the dolphin and the dog, one thing remains true: it was an unbelievable sight to behold. Luckily, all of it was caught on film so that others could take part in their amazing interaction.
