Most people think of cats and dogs with affinity and affection. They are our friends, our companions and our confidantes. For those who have a strong connection with animals, it can sometimes be hard to even acknowledge that animal cruelty is a very real thing happening in the world.
Today we have a heartbreaking and incredible story about a brave dog in China who survived the unimaginable. Although this story has a happy ending, we have to warn readers that the content may be disturbing and that there are some graphic images ahead.
Though some of the details are unclear, the core of this tale is that a man named Qiao Wei was walking near the Sichuan University Campus in Shengdu, China when he spotted a little white dog across the street. Still, this was no ordinary dog—as it walked, it had two steel arrows pierced entirely through its body and was somehow still standing. In shock, Wei immediately wanted to get help for the poor animal. After some struggle to safely capture it, they were able to rush her to the Sichuan Qiming Animal Protection Center for the help she desperately needed.
After the veterinarians took a look at her, they discovered that both arrows had miraculously missed all vital organs and muscles. Shortly thereafter, the medical team was able to safely remove the arrows, clean the pup and give her a place to sleep in the Shengdu Animal Rescue shelter.
This story is frankly incredible, both for the strength of this poor creature and for the horror that someone would do such a thing to an innocent animal. Unfortunately, this kind of savage animal abuse in China is not uncommon due to a large black market for dog meat. This leads thieves and poachers to actively hunt strays and even family-owned dogs in the hopes of turning a profit.
Still, while this story, in particular, has a cultural context, it remains a vivid reminder that this kind of abuse can and does happen anywhere. As human beings, it is our responsibility to look out for our fellow man as well as for creatures that are weak and defenseless. As mentioned at the beginning, though, there is a happy ending.
The little mutt in question was able to make a full recovery and has since been named Quivver. She is safe and sound with the other animals at the shelter. We can only hope that some lucky visitor will be able to adopt her after hearing her inspiring story. Catch the full story by clicking here.
