Benjamin Jordan was confused as to why his dog Killian, a black lab German shepherd mix, had suddenly become hostile toward his 7-month-old son Finn’s baby sister.
However, he eventually realized that this strange behavior would potentially save the life of infant his son.
“We noticed the dog was getting very defensive when Alexis was around,” Jordan told ABC News of his 22-year-old babysitter, Alexis Khan. “He would growl and stand between her and our son. His hair would stand up on the back of his neck and we knew something was up.”
Normally, Killian is a very friendly and calm dog so this definitely set off a red light for the Jordans as they had already become suspicious of Khan, who they employed 5 months prior.
The family decided to place an iPhone under a living room couch to record audio, figuring they would hear Khan abusing their dog. What they discovered was far worse.
They heard their baby crying and Khan telling their son to “shut the f**k up.” They even heard what they said was Khan shaking and slapping their 7-month-old.
“We just could not believe it,” Jordan said.
The Jordans immediately took their son to the hospital to find out if he was OK.
“It started with cussing,” Jordan told WCSC-TV. “Then you hear slap noises and his crying changes from a distress cry to a pain cry. I just wanted to reach through the audio tape, go back in time and just grab him up.”
Khan was later questioned by Charleston, South Carolina police and ended up confessing to the abuse. She ended up pleading guilty to assault and battery and was sentenced to a maximum of three years in jail and is placed on the registry of child abusers. She will never be allowed to work with children again.
The Jordans were so pleased by Killian’s efforts and say that he’s a hero.
“Who knows how many children she has abused or how many more she would have had,” Jordan said.
He also credits Killian for potentially saving his son’s life.
“Had our dog not alerted us to the trouble, had my wife’s instincts not said we need to make something happen, it could have been Finn that was killed by the babysitter,” Jordan told WCSC-TV. “You never know.”
Finn luckily didn’t suffer from any long-term effects because of the abuse. Killian is going on to help even more people and is currently training as a psychiatric service animal. You can hear their story in the video below.
