Dogs are incredible creatures — they have nothing but good intentions. They want to love, be loved, and they have an uncanny ability to show compassion, and that compassion knows no limits whatsoever. Just ask Storm, an English golden retriever, and his owner Mark Freeley.

It was an ordinary day like any other when Mark Freeley was walking his dogs Storm and Sara; soon, they spotted a baby deer in trouble, struggling to stay afloat, in the Long Island Sound. It was going to take a team to rescue the fawn, but the entire rescue effort was going to be fronted by one brave dog.

As soon as Storm spotted the drowning fawn, he sprung into action without hesitation — and it was all caught on camera.

“Storm just plunged into the water and started swimming out to the fawn, grabbed it by the neck, and started swimming to shore,” Mark Freeley told CBS News.

Storm heroically brought the fawn to safety, put it’s exhausted body on the shore, and laid down next the baby deer.

“And then he started nudging it, and started pulling it to make sure she was gonna be OK, I guess,” Freeley said.

Now that the deer was out of the water, Freeley called animal rescue to come and make sure the baby got the medical attention it needed. The poor fawn was clearly not in the best of shape.

As soon as rescuers arrived, the baby deer became startled and immediately took off into the water again.

“This time it went out even further,” Freeley said.

Freeley and a man named Frank Floridia from Strong Island Rescue went into the water to rescue the fawn for the second time. It took a rope and a lot of strength to get the deer back to shore once again.

“I don’t think I could’ve done it without the help of my partner. I was exhausted at the point my knee blew out, and I collapsed on the beach,” Floridia said. His partner had run a mile on the beach to help.

With the rescuers having a newfound respect for what Storm did the first time, the deer was finally pulled to shore once more.

The poor thing was covered in ticks and suffered an eye injury; the little deer was rescued just in time.

The baby deer is now healing and recovering at an animal rescue facility until it can regain its strength to return to the wild. Watch this incredible news footage of the video below.
