Every day we hear about incredible people doing incredible things. However, every so often, an animal actually becomes the glorified hero of the story.
One day in Santiago, Chile, a scene was captured on a highway that left the world stunned. Especially when everyone realized who deserved a medal for their actions.
Highways can be extremely dangerous with how fast people drive and how congested they can become. The thought of trying to dart across one seems like an impossible (and frightening) task.
A stray dog was filmed attempting to cross the busy Chilean roadway. He had been in the median, but wanted to get to the other side.
Sadly, he was struck by vehicles. Unable to move, he laid on the ground as cars continued to whiz by.
There was an angel watching.
Many would think that a driver would have stopped to help the poor animal in the road. However, the first to step in was actually another homeless dog.
The video shows a second canine on the highway, working to rescue the injured dog. All while cars zoomed passed them, he actually wraps his paws around the first dog to try and pull it to safety.
Very slowly he moves the dog closer to the side of the road using the strength of his legs. Miraculously, he eventually makes it.
Construction workers took notice of the dogs and stepped into action at that point. But if it hadn’t of been for the courageous second dog, who knows how long the other would have remained in the road.
Although the reporter in the video ends the segment saying the first stray dog survived, unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. The person who posted the YouTube video explained:
“Unfortunately the reporter got it wrong when he said the injured dog lived, he passed at the vet some time after, and the other dog escaped back into the urban terrain. A good samaritan never hangs out looking to take credit.”
Dogs can be very protective creatures, and often we hear of ones that defend their owners. In an Animal Planet article they say:
“Canines know who their family is and most won’t hesitate to put themselves in harm’s way to protect one of their own. In fact, most dogs have such a strong instinct to protect their loved ones that no amount of socialization will diminish it.”
In this story, however, the dog was homeless without an owner. But still his instincts kicked in when he spotted another canine in danger, even putting his life on the line to help.
The surveillance footage of the highway dog rescue left viewers awestruck. One commenter shared:
“This is by far the most endearing, inspiring, lovely, amazing, heroic, selfless, light and love filled act I have ever seen! God bless you baby dog! A true earth Angel!”
Another person wrote:
“What a moving story, life would be miserable without dogs. That hero doggy needs a huge steak dinner for being so selfless and brave…”
Residents were so touched by the incident that many reached out hoping to adopt the hero pup. Yet, according to TODAY, cops and rescue workers weren’t able to find him, and eventually had to give up looking.
