If you ever grew up with siblings, you’ll know there’s nothing quite worse than when you did something wrong and someone rats you out to mom.
With that one whispered admission of “she did it”, all the trust goes out the window. You know that, when it comes down to it, your siblings would only ever put themselves before you. It’s betrayal at its absolute finest.
As it turns out, the same disloyalty is sometimes shown amongst dog siblings. When it comes down to it, our canine friends just want to be loved – so if that means ratting in your sister so you’re still on mom’s side, so be it.
One video that has had the whole internet audience giggling away shows two guilty black labs who are being questioned about a stolen cookie.
The brother and sister, named Harley and Loa, are being accused by their human mom of eating a cookie. But, as mom points out, it’s likely that only one dog is the suspect in this situation. So, in order for only one dog to take the blame, the other needs to let mom know who did the dirty.
Harley and Loa, bless them, are sitting guiltily in front of the camera while mom begins her interrogation. They know what this tone of voice means – whoever did something wrong has been caught out.
Mom zooms the camera in on Loa, who is using her “puppy dog eyes” to the best of her ability, and says:
“Now, Loa, I know you love your brother, and it would hurt you to turn him in.”
She then pans her camera to Harley, and says:
“And Harley, I know you love your sister, and you don’t want to get her in trouble.”
Mom then adds a big “however” – she will be easy on whoever turns the other in for the cookie crime. She tells them that if either one of them turns their brother or sister in, they won’t be punished.
After a long lecture that results in a few yawns from Harley, mom finally gets around to asking the all-important question: who took the cookie?
Evidently, one of the dogs has already had some time to think about the repercussions of staying silent. Because straight away, as soon as mom has asked the question, Harley lifts up his paw and plants it on top of Loa’s back.
Loa has a classic guilty expression on her face, so we’d bet our money that Harley is telling the truth. Just like us humans, dogs really can display signs of guilt, like keeping one’s head down and averting one’s gaze.
While there is debate that a dog’s guilty look might just be a learned response, adapted to lessen the punishment they receive, it does make it pretty obvious that the dog in question is, in fact, responsible for the accused crime.
As if Harley’s initial accusation wasn’t enough, mom repeats the question, adding:
“I know that this is one of the most difficult things you’ve ever done.”
It doesn’t look it to us!
Once more, Harley plants his paw on Loa’s back.
Mom asks if Loa has anything to say, but of course, she stays silent. So mom asks once more who stole the cookie. And again, Harley’s paw finds its way onto Loa’s back.
We’ll never know for sure whether Harley was truthfully blaming his sister, or whether it was all one big cover-up for his own crime. If dogs could talk, this would probably have been a much noisier discussion.
