A soft, furry kitten is undeniably one of the cutest creatures in existence. So cute, in fact, that even this local neighborhood dog couldn’t resist helping a few out!
In an adorable clip that has since gone viral, we get to see a loving pup selflessly nursing a litter of newborn kittens— the best part? She does it with a dazzling grin.
According to ViralHog, the 40-second video was filmed in Lamia, Greece, by a woman named Georgia Spathoula.
According to The Dodo, Georgia discovered the litter of kittens while she was taking out the trash.
When she got to the dumpster, garbage bags in hand, she came across a disturbing scene: three newborn kittens tied inside of a bag, cruelly abandoned and left to die amongst the filth.
When Georgia heard the mewing, she quickly unwrapped the kittens but wasn’t sure what to do next.
She and her husband discussed the circumstances before coming up with an idea and deciding to enlist the help of a neighborhood dog that had just recently given birth.
There was no guaranteeing that the nursing canine would accept the batch of mouse-sized kittens, but at this point, it was their best option.
According to The Nest, although a kitten’s mother’s milk is the best nutritional option (as a result of the natural antibodies contained in the colostrum), a nursing dog’s milk can also act as an adequate substitute.
The Nest says that this interspecies nursing can even be more beneficial than bottle-feeding. They explain, “[the kittens] will be able to eat on their schedule instead of yours, and you won’t have to worry about whether you’re doing it right or if they’re getting too little or too much to eat. “
Although Georgia and her husband were not sure if the nursing dog would accept the kittens, the canine proved willing to help— even accepting the little furballs with a toothy smile!
Georgia took a video of the pup smiling happily as she nurses the three kittens. The video was uploaded to Facebook and has since gone viral, garnering over 505,000 views.
It’s amazing that this heartless dog was so willing to accept these kittens, ultimately saving their lives.
The caption on Georgia’s video reads, in part, “Fortunately, nature has made sure that animals are more tender than humans.”
This kind-hearted neighborhood dog isn’t the only canine who has helped out kittens in need— Check out this adorable video of a maternal Husky named Lilo and her kitten sister Rosie.
