For dog owners, nothing is harder than seeing your pup sad or upset. When Daisy, a Great Pyrenees/Border Collie mix, lost her litter of puppies in a tragic fire, her family worried she might never go back to being her happy-go-lucky self – until a miracle happened.
In Roseburg, Oregon, an accidental barn fire devastated a family and mother when 2 pigs, 4 goats, and an entire litter of newly born puppies lost their lives.
Daisy, a loving dog and member of the Nelson family, had just given birth to a litter of 7 healthy, beautiful puppies. However, when an accidental fire broke out, the Nelsons did everything in their power to save the puppies yet were unsuccessful. The family even had to hold Daisy back from running into the burning farmhouse in a hopeless attempt to save her pups.
“She’s been just so sad and so heartbroken,” said Christine Nelson, Daisy’s owner, in an interview with KPIC. “She [Daisy] just goes down to the barn and sits there, and barks, and tries to look for them still.”
Hoping to mend her broken heart, Daisy’s family began searching for other orphaned puppies or kittens that Daisy could adopt and raise as her own. The Nelsons reached out to a local news station to share their emotional story – and the response they recieved was amazing.
Daisy’s family was contacted by an owner whose Border Collie had died in an emergency surgery after giving birth to 8 puppies.
With at last a ray of hope, the Nelsons quickly arranged for Daisy to become their new foster mother. At just 10 days old, the puppies were introduced to Daisy, who seemed like the perfect candidate due to being half Border Collie.
““It has been a huge endeavor of everyone pulling together to keep these eight little beauties going with around-the-clock feedings,” said Deanna Murphy-Vest, the daughter of the family with the orphaned puppies.
Thankfully, Daisy stepped up and became the best foster mom these puppies could ever ask for. The arrival of the new puppies seems to have lifted Daisy’s spirits, allowing her to enjoy her life again by giving such a powerful gift of love.
