Dog looks on water helplessly as octopus swims away with her favorite tennis ball

Dogs are friendly and playful by nature.

They love to play anytime and anywhere. They’re curious creatures, too, especially when they see other animals come near them. They sniff them and wonder if they want to play (or as we can assume that’s what they want).

They are also generally gentle beings.

No dog would attack or harm anything if not given any reason to. And that applies even when they lose their favorite toy to someone (or something) else. They’ll look, turn, and walk away – with a sad heart, of course.

That’s what happened to poor Lucy.

This Border Collie loves to play fetch with her hoomans.

She even has her favorite tennis ball. Lucy was happy to go out and play with her fur parents, Almar and Riette Creighton.

The couple and their kids went on a trip to Davies Pool in Onrus, Western Cape, South Africa. Of course, they brought dear Lucy with them.

You can see Lucy enjoying the water and ready to play as ever.

She loves it when it lands in the water. Wagging her tail and excited to get it back for another fetch.

She accidentally dropped the ball, and the waves washed it away.

She was ready to get it back when something unusual happened.

The water was starting to rise as high tide was coming in. Suddenly, an octopus swam to the shallows and bam!

It got hold of Lucy’s ball, wrapping its tentacle around it!

“I think my reaction was the same as Lucy’s. I’ve never experienced anything like it. This was just next level!” Riette said who was also as surprised to witness what happened.

She looked at her hoomans to seek help.

According to Almar Creighton, Riette’s husband, Lucy gave them a questioning look. The poor thing was confused about whether she’d get the ball or just let the octopus take it. She has no idea what to do with the situation.

Look at that poor thing!

Considering that a tennis ball has more density than water, it’s expected that it would float. It will need a strong pull to counter the ball’s buyout force due to water pressure. Science aside, it means a strong force needs to hold the ball underwater.

So, the octopus must have had a firm grip on the ball as it dove back to its lair.

Lucy waited for about 20 minutes for her tennis ball to resurface.

When she realized it wasn’t coming back, she just shrugged it off and continued to play on the shore. Of course, it left her both amused and confused at the same time. It’s not every day an octopus steals your toy. But it’s all good for dear Lucy.

Now we can all just wonder if that tennis ball stayed underwater and how the octopus could do that. They’re known to be smart puzzle solvers so we could only expect the octopus to figure it out.

As for Lucy? She got a new tennis ball the next day. Yay!

See how the octopus snatched Lucy’s ball away in the video below!
