For so many of us, the health and well-being of our pets is everything. However, there are people out there who don’t value or appreciate animals and instead, only see them as a means for a financial solution. Puppy mills are alarmingly popular in the US. According to information gathered by The Puppy Mill Project, there are an estimated 167,388 breeding dogs that are doomed to live their life trapped in unsanitary cages away from the rest of the world. This is the story about one of those dogs.
Cesar is one of eight Yorkies saved from a puppy mill in Spain. His horrible physical condition sheds light on exactly what happens to the animals who are bred in these facilities. He was locked in a box for ten years where his only job was breed, eat, and sleep. He never experienced the love of a family and if the puppy mill he came from had their way, he never would.
The moment he was rescued was incredibly emotional. If you look closely behind the matted fur, you’ll see two sad and defeated eyes. The little guy appeared to have totally given up on the world and probably assumed that this was all there was to life.
Fortunately, Cesar was meant for better things. Because he had limited movement for so long, his first steps were difficult and likely painful. His soft brown eyes even had tears in them as he took his first steps in a brand new world.
Once it was established that Cesar would survive his ordeal, the rescue went to work on his fur. He was completely matted with feces to the point you couldn’t really tell what breed of dog he is. As the physical weight of his fur was removed, the symbolic weight his ordeal also seemed to lift.
Cesar remained calm and sweet throughout the grooming process which sheds light on the type of animal he truly is. The result was a precious little dog that was ready to be someone’s forever friend.
The story has an amazing ending with Cesar finding his home with a couple who are prepared to give Cesar everything he missed out on for the last ten years of his life. Never again will he be trapped, alone, or starving for love and attention. There’s just not a happier ending for this little guy.
The sad reality is, Cesar is one of the millions of dogs who have had to endure this type of life. Until we make the conscious effort to stop supporting puppy mills, then these innocent animals will be subjected to this type of life. Cesar was one of the lucky ones, but many of them are not. These facilities are all about profits, and never about the care of the animals.
Animals deserve the best chance at life, and people play a critical role in that. Let’s make the right choices, so dogs like Cesar never have to endure ten years locked in a cage.
