The bond between a human and an animal can be life changing. Sometimes animals can understand us better than any other human does; they are often more full of patience and compassion than our human acquaintances. This little boy learned the value of having a furry friend in the sweetest way possible.
Hernan is a young boy who has Down Syndrome. His mother, Ana, wanted him to have a companion who he could grow with. She brought a dog, Himalaya, home to be a part of the family. She knew the two would hit it off, but she had not foreseen the adorable moment that would take place when Himalaya set her eyes on Hernan.
The little boy was sitting down on the concrete when the dog saw him. He was seated on the front driveway, just outside his house. Himalaya sat down in front of him; she was only a foot away. She kept her eyes locked on Hernan as he took an interest in her.
Captivated, Hernan scooted closer to Himalaya. He sat up but kept a little distance in between them. Himalaya, however, was not content with this acknowledgement. She stretched her nose out toward the boy and slowly crawled closer to him. Himalaya put a paw on Hernan’s shoe and attempted to rest her head in his lap.
The young boy was intimidated. He shuffled back a little bit, keeping his eyes on the pup. The sweet dog moved toward him again, determined to make a lasting connection with the child. As Hernan pushed aside Himalaya’s paw, she rolled over onto her back, looking up at him with an outstretched neck. She reached toward him, not taking no for an answer.
Eventually, Hernan allowed Himalaya to touch him. She sat close to him, leaning her weight onto her hind legs, and placed a paw on his shoulder. The dog looked directly into the boys eyes. It was as if she were comforting him with silent words. She laid down and finally won his affection. Hernan leaned toward Himalaya and gave her a big hug. The two cuddled together in a beautiful moment that Ana will remember forever.
Himalaya’s adorable interaction with Hernan proves that animals make the best of friends. This sweet story reminds us how powerful the bonds of love can be, especially when it comes to unique children like Hernan.
