Dog owners form incredible bonds with their dogs.
Anyone who has had a doggie of their own knows how loyal and loving these animals can be. After enough time passes, our dogs truly become part of the family. We think of them more as brothers or sisters rather than as just animals.
For these reasons and others, we do everything we can to make sure our furry companions stay safe.
In a story out of Tacoma, Washington, a young boxer named Sugar suddenly found his life at serious risk.
Ron Pace is the owner of Canyon Crest K9 Training Center, a program to help dog owners teach their dogs obedience and other skills. One family had brought their dog Sugar in for a normal session. Still, halfway through the session, the dog collapsed on the ground and fell into a seizure.
After a moment, Sugar had seemingly stopped breathing.
Sensing that time was of the essence, Pace sprung into action.
Without skipping a beat, Pace moves over the dog and does his best to bring it back. He tries pumping the dog’s chest to make it conscious again. After a few pumps, Sugar moves slightly—still the dog isn’t fully out of danger yet. It doesn’t seem to be enough.
Pace checks Sugar’s tongue and mouth, breathes into his snout, and keeps pumping.
Sugar’s owner nearby is nearly beside herself but Pace remains determined.
Pace keeps doing pumps and trying to perform CPR on the dog while the owner calls Sugar’s name. After a few moments, Sugar starts to breathe again! “Good boy, Sugar!” the owner calls out. Once the dog’s breath returns, Pace begins to gently pet the dog.
Finally, the owner takes over petting and Sugar comes back to life!
After gaining a little more strength, Sugar is able to get up on his own feet again.
Although a little unsteady, the dog is back in action in short time thanks to Pace’s help. Reportedly after the events of the video, the owner took Sugar to the vet and found out the dog had cardiomyopathy. The disease is related to irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath and sometimes even heart failure.
Fortunately, professional help was able to help Sugar that day!
In all, this story is a testament to quick thinking—and to how much we love our dogs.
Although looking a little worse for wear, Sugar and his owner were safely able to leave that day. For anyone who does have a dog, make sure to hug it just a little more tightly today than usual.
