Our pets are like our babies, so when Daniela Stolfi-Tow learned that her Golden Retriever Lily had cancer she was completely devastated.
Sadly, Lily only had a small chance of survival. So when doctors gave Daniela the test results she knew it was important to share them with the dog herself. The scene that was captured on film quickly went viral and has been watched millions of times.
It all happened so fast.
Daniela is an animal lover from Oahu, Hawaii, where she lives with her spouse and pets. One night, their dog Lily became so ill she had difficulties standing up.
After rushing her to the vet, Daniela and her husband were informed just how serious her condition was. They had discovered a tumor on Lily’s spleen.
On top of that, the dog had internal bleeding and her breathing was being affected by anemia. If an emergency blood transfusion didn’t take place right away – they risked losing Lily within hours.
There was even more scary news to come after the blood transfusion.
Daniela explained on her YouTube channel:
“Once they stabilized her they told us it was Hermangiosarcoma, and its very common in Golden Retrievers. It comes on fast and she only had days to live if we didn’t do surgery.”
However, there was a catch. Lily having surgery didn’t necessarily secure the fact that she would live a long life.
“The bad news was that even if we did do the surgery she’d only have months. There was a small chance, only 10% chance that it was the benign kind.”
Even the vet didn’t seem hopeful.
Daniela explained how they were told that in the 25 years the vet worked in emergency medicine, she hadn’t experienced a case where the tumor was benign.
But even with slim chances, the couple decided to go ahead with the surgery to try and save their Golden Retriever’s life. During the procedure, a six-pound tumor was removed from Lily’s spleen.
She seemed to be getting better.
Although it appeared that Lily’s condition was improving, the couple was warned not to get their hopes up.
“…they said it would only be temporary. That in a few months she would bleed out. I kept saying, “but what if it is benign?” They were clear that it has never happened and we should be prepared and just enjoy our time with her.”
It took a week for the test results to come in – and when they did, Daniela decided to let Lily know the truth.

As it turns out, Lily’s tumor was indeed benign! Daniela was so thrilled about it that she captured the moment she let her in on the great news.
She speaks excitedly to Lily as the dog looks up at her mama. Of course Lily doesn’t know exactly what Daniela’s saying, but after such a scary journey followed by a miraculous outcome – it’s a moment that could bring a tear to your eye.
Daniela has been very touched by all of the people sharing their stories, and hopes that Lily’s helps others going through similar situations.
In an interview with Pet360 she advised, “do your research and don’t give up hope.” She also said,
“Our pets are like supernovas; they shine so bright and fade out so fast. Anything we can do to keep them with us as long as possible we try and do. Thankfully, we were lucky.”
