They say sometimes animals choose the person, rather than the other way around, and this certainly seems to be the case for Abbey and her new dog Ted.

The two met in January when Abbey was working her shift at the SPCA, where Ted had been brought to the day before. He was timid and quiet and only interacted with Abbey when she tried to take him on a walk (he refused to) and fed him some cheese-flavored bacon.

She also tried to get a bigger kennel for him, but besides that, she explains, “I had next to no contact with Ted during my shift at the SPCA. I left and went home.”

The next morning she woke up around 3 A.M. to get ready for her job at the airport, and when she came home, she saw a stray dog sitting at her home.

At first, she was wary of the dog, but she decided to approach him. It did take a while for him to get close enough to her, but she noticed a small nick on his nose- the same as the one she had seen on Ted the day before.

“That’s when I realized that it had to be Ted,” she said.

After a quick call to SPCA, she was able to confirm that the dog in her house was indeed Ted.

No one seems sure how Ted knew how to get to her home. The shelter was 5.5 kilometers away from Abbey’s home and would have had to run past an airport, several neighborhoods, ponds, and lakes to get to her exact house.

On the occurrence, Abbey explains-

“It could be a complete coincidence, but I’m from Yellowknife. Everything’s a sign when it comes to animals. I can’t ignore a sign like that. He showed up at my house, out of how many people [that] live here? All the dogs. All the smells. He chose my house. Where I am.”

Abbey is currently in the process of adopting Ted. She’s looking for a new home to hold her new pet, as dogs are not permitted in her current location.

She finally notes-

“[I’m going to] build my bond with him that apparently, he senses more than I do. [He’s] literally sitting on a platter ready to be loved and taken care of. He’s coming with me.”

The two are about to embark on a beautiful adventure, and their story is absolutely incredible! We hope to see them live a long and happy life together.
