You’ve heard the phrase “opposites attract” and nothing could be closer to the truth in an unlikely friendship between an Australian Sheppard and a Jersey calf. The calf, named Calvin, was born to a dairy cow mother in Ontario, Canada. Common practice on dairy cow farms is to remove the calf from the mother right away so that she can continue to produce milk for commercial use.
Calvin left his mother after just two days of being born and was placed in an isolated pen where he could hardly move.
Unfortunately, male calves are almost always slaughtered because they are of no use on a dairy farm. However, members from Black Goat Farm and Sanctuary were determined to save the calf from an untimely death and asked the dairy farmer to allow the calf to live out his days at the sanctuary. You would assume that the story would end there. After all, everybody loves a good life-saving tale. But we’re just getting started!
Once at the sanctuary, Calvin was introduced to a couple of dogs that seemed to go into protective mode over the little guy. One pup, in particular, Lincoln, seemed to really bond with the baby cow and would hardly let him out of his site.
It’s almost as if Lincoln understood that Calvin had already been through so much. It was time for him to have some rest and relaxation.
They seem to have a great time just lounging around, getting a drink, and just enjoying the peace and quite the sanctuary has to offer.
However, life can’t always be serious. They get in plenty of play time, too! Just look at those grins!
It even appears that Lincoln has shown Calvin the art of begging. Can they get any cuter?!
It’s fun to watch their friendship blossom and I’m sure we’ll see much more of these two over the years!
It’s because of organizations such as Black Goat Farm and Sanctuary that calves like Calvin get a second chance at life. However, it’s important to understand that not every animal can be saved. Megan Mostacci, co-founder of Black Goat Farm and Sanctuary explained it in a Facebook post,
A lot of people think that sanctuary life is fun – lots of animals to cuddle and get kisses from. I wish that were all true. While we are lucky and get to unwind with animal cuddles and love – it isn’t always so wonderful.
In tribute to the animals that were lost, they planted a weeping willow tree. In a captured photograph, Calvin stands next to the tree as a sign of hope and promise that together, we may be able to make a small difference.
