Do you remember the first time you got vaccinated? Or the first time you visited the doctor for a blood work appointment? Everyone, even grown-ups, dread these sorts of things and either we admit it or not, we easily get scared of getting pricked, even if it meant saving our lives from danger.
Little Gracey may only be 10-months-old, but she already has had her own share of surgeries that is even more than most adults have experienced. She was born with a number of medical conditions and is not a stranger anymore to getting shots and blood work done. However, that does not necessarily mean that she is immune to the pain.
Her mom, Shannon Wemyss, shared the difficult first few months in her daughter’s life.
“She has been in and out of hospital since she was born. She has had open-heart surgery, a kidney operation and she also has Down syndrome. She has spent months on end in her short life already in the hospital and has been through more than most have in a lifetime.”
Seeing her little girl in pain was the hardest part for her as a parent. It was a tough time and Gracey was growing even more terrified after each appointment.
“She is terrified of getting blood done and it’s an incredibly traumatic time for her and for us watching her in such pain. She had had blood done a huge amount of times already and she is always distraught. Nothing can calm her or soothe her, as she is too young to have numbing cream. Until we met Ryan.”
Gracey’s pediatrician, Dr. Ryan Coetzee, knew that it will never be easy being regularly pricked for blood work. And so, he thought of a way to make little Gracey feel at ease while he was getting blood samples. He sang the beautiful Nat King Cole classic “Unforgettable” that totally made the tiny baby calm and quiet even when she was getting blood work done.
Shannon was quite amazed on how the doctor handled the situation and how he made her calm and relaxed just by using his vocal talent.
“I have never seen anything like it. He sang to her the whole time while being able to concentrate on getting the blood with a tiny needle.”
He was also good at making parents at ease, knowing that their little child is in caring hands. The fact that he also spared Gracey’s mom the agony of seeing her daughter in pain once again is already something to be thankful for. Dr. Coetzee is definitely an angel in disguise!
The best part in all of this? Shannon was able to film the heartwarming scene! She uploaded the video on social media and after just a night, this amazing doctor with an equally amazing voice became an internet hero! Everyone was touched by his kindness and genuine concern not only for his patients but to their families as well.
The heartwarming scene was absolutely moving. Truly, not all heroes wear capes. And this hero in his lab gown is someone we can all be inspired from.
