Thanksgiving is always a special time of year, a time for people to be thankful for their good fortune and grateful for all they have in their lives. It’s a time where we’re reminded of just how lucky we are and how much we can sometimes take for granted, as well as remembering the people out there who don’t have the same luxuries and comforts as us.

For many people, it’s also a time of giving and charity, a day where we have a chance to help the less fortunate, and one little girl is setting a truly extraordinary example after working tirelessly to raise funds for more than a hundred Thanksgiving dinners for families in need.

The story actually begins a couple of years ago, when North Carolina mom Lisa Fischer suggested that her family take part in a charitable project to help the less fortunate on Thanksgiving.

After doing a little research, Lisa discovered the Charlotte Rescue Mission, a program dedicated to helping people who suffer from drug and alcohol addictions and dependencies.

She and her family, including her young daughter, Alex, all took part in the program to donate a box of food to the mission’s annual Thanksgiving drive. Alex really got into the idea and wanted to give much more than just one box.

“She was like one box is not enough, let’s do ten,” explained Lisa in an interview with WCNC.

Lisa had always been impressed by her daughter’s ambition, but she wanted to teach Alex that food costs money and it isn’t always possible to contribute as much as we wish we could.

“And so we were like, ‘Ten is a lot. Why don’t you see if you can raise some of the money to help pay for that food,’” Lisa said. “Just so that she could get an idea that food costs money, that it’s not just a given for everybody.”

Little Alex followed her mother’s advice, setting up lemonade stands with her sister and working tirelessly to raise as much money as she possibly could. Now, a couple of years later, 9-year-old Alex is going far beyond ten boxes! She and her sister, Caroline, have managed to raise enough cash to cover the cost of a grand total of 108 boxes of Thanksgiving food.

As well as running her lemonade stands, Alex also set up a GoFundMe page to add to the funds, able to provide more than a hundred families with a box containing nine food items in total, including a turkey weighing up to 15lbs and a pan for cooking up a delicious pie.

It’s so inspiring to see a young girl like Alex taking on such a big responsibility and working so hard to help the less fortunate. Her mom is so proud, as she should be, and little Alex is determined to keep on helping more and more people in the years to come.
