It was just another normal day in the water for diver Gary Grayson in the waters off of Great Britain’s Scilly Isles. Throughout his times as a diver, Grayson has encountered a variety of dangers during his time in the water, mostly in the form of sharks and crocodiles. So, you can imagine his surprise when he had an encounter with an entirely different type of sea creatures, a lovable seal.
Here is the story about diver Gary Grayson and his encounter with a lovable seal looking for nothing more than some human contact.
Gary Grayson, Man of Adventure
Gary Grayson, who hails from Salford, United Kingdom, lives a life full of adventurous activities, including sky-diving, motorcycle riding, and the aforementioned scuba diving, in addition to many other highly intense activities. Along on this particular trip was a friend who filmed the entire wondrous encounter.
A Chance Meeting
As Grayson and his friend swam off the shores of Scilly Isle, they were approached by a family of seals. Neither Grayson nor his photographer friend quite expected what happened next. Seals can be pretty unpredictable and can become quite aggressive towards divers. A seal pup emerged from the group, approaching Grayson. As it swam up to Grayson, the diver held his breath, not knowing what would happen next.
Having a Bite
At first, the seal pup simply rubbed its nose against Grayson’s mask. As Grayson reach out to stroke the seal, it did something unexpected. It reached out its flipper and shook his hand. The seal’s exuberance emboldened the diver. At some point during the encounter, the seal even nibbled lightly on Grayson’s gloves.
Chin Scratch
The young seal seemed to enjoy it when Grayson reached out to scratch its chin, seeming to relish contact with another living creature. It even looked like it had a smile on its face as Grayson scratched oh so lightly beneath its whiskered face.
Belly Rub
The biggest moment of the special encounter, though, came when the seal rolled over and allowed Grayson to rub its belly. In fact, when Grayson stopped rubbing, the seal tapped him to get the diver to continue to give it the attention it sought. This made this particular encounter the most memorable for the diver who had swam with dolphins, crocodiles, and sharks.
Face-to-Face
This face-to-face encounter has left quite an impression on Grayson. Luckily, his diving partner had the camera rolling and recorded the whole sweet encounter. Grayson uploaded the video to his Youtube account after returning to his hotel room that day, sending the link to his friends and family.
Video Goes Viral
Soon though, the video had gone viral. Since 2014, when the video was initially released, it has garnered over 15 million views and 11,000 likes on YouTube. The one touched most by the video was Grayson himself, as he claims to watch it almost every day. Here is the viral video of Grayson’s encounter with the friendly seal.
