Seb Carter spent many years training to become an airline pilot. He couldn’t have done it without the emotional and financial support of his dad.
We all have dreams. In theory, everyone can achieve their dreams. But some of us are lucky enough to have parents that support us in any way they can.
Seb Carter was once a kid with a dream.
He wanted to fly planes for a living. Sure, some people laughed at him and said that he could never thrive in such a competitive industry.
But one person always believed in Seb: his father.
Naturally, Seb didn’t become an airline pilot overnight. Instead, Seb had to get through years of school and training. And every step of the way, Seb’s dad offered his support.
At long last, Seb achieved his dream. Now every day, his job is to fly around the globe and make money while doing it!
Then one day, Seb learned something amazing. His dad told him that he was flying on his airline. Seb looked up the flight and saw that it was a flight he was in charge of. Seb didn’t tell his father this news. Instead, he had a better way of breaking it to him.
When the flight was boarding, Seb looked back anxiously, seeing the passengers file past.
Eventually, Seb saw his dad walk through the hatch. The flight attendant, who was in on the surprise, told Seb’s father that there was an issue. She took the father aside. The father was confused to see that he was being led into the cockpit.
Then the dad saw his son smiling back from the pilot’s seat.
The dad was so happy to see his son. He realized that his child would be taking him to the destination.
Seb stood up and gave his father a hug.
Then the dad gave the copilot a handshake.
Next, the copilot allowed the dad to sit in the other cockpit chair. The son showed the dad the controls he would be using.
Luckily, Seb was filming this surprise.
He uploaded the footage to YouTube, where it soon went viral. To date, it has gained 4.4 million views. It also has more than 98,000 likes and 2,800 comments. People have been saying things like this:
Clearly, many people have been cheered by this video. (While a few are just playing “Guess the Plane.”)
And flying isn’t Seb’s only talent. He is also an accomplished piano player.
His most popular piano video dates back to 2008.
The song is a cover of Signs by Bloc Party. It has gained 55,000 views.
In this older video, Seb is a teenager. At this time, he must have been studying in school still.
He was at the beginning of his journey to his dream career.
So how long does it really take to become an airline pilot?
Flying magazine outlines all of the steps. First, a person needs to study a four-year degree (although this doesn’t necessarily need to be in aviation.) Then they need to complete flight training, which can take as little as six months but can take two years.
After that, the person needs to build 1,000 to 1,500 hours of flight time, which can take another two and a half years.
After that, the pilot needs to be hired to fly multi-crew turbine aircraft. Then they need to advance to captain and gain another 500 to 1,5000 hours of piloting time. Then, finally, they will be able to become a major airline pilot.
So it took Seb a long while to get his job. But thanks to his dad, he was always going to succeed.
