All moms are familiar with the struggle of trying to change their child’s diaper in a public restroom. Yet, for fathers, changing their kid’s diaper is even more difficult, especially when there’s no changing table for them to use.
One annoyed dad, Donte Palmer, is raising awareness for the lack of changing stations in men’s restrooms by sharing his struggle publicly.
Donte is a stay-at-home father with three young boys in Northeast Florida. Photos of Palmer struggling to change his son’s diaper went viral, along with his vision for change.
Without a table, diaper bin, or even a place to sit, Palmer has been showing his unique technique – squatting. Awkward but effective, Palmer has to squat just to change his kid’s diapers. Talk about a leg day.
Thanks to Donte Palmer, the hashtag #squatforchange has gained attention, along with photos of this dad being forced to squat just to change his child’s diaper. His instagram account, Three Boys One Goal, shines a light on this problem for all fathers.
“What’s the deal with not having changing tables in men’s bathroom as if we don’t exist,” said Palmer about this issue. “Clearly, we do this often because look how comfortable my son is. It’s routine to him! Let’s fix this problem!”
Most changing stations are limited to women’s bathrooms, a relic from the past. This movement hopes to show that caring for your child is something that everyone does, not just mothers. In a modern world, where some children only have fathers to rely on, shouldn’t everyone have the same facilities to care for their kids?
Donte Palmer hopes by raising awareness about this issue, that restrooms will become accommodating for all parents.
He has even started a Go Fund Me page, Squat For Change, to tackle the issue head-on. So far, Palmer has already raised over $1,500 of his goal.
All proceeds will be going toward updating public restrooms for fathers to have the changing stations they need. Any additional proceeds will be donated to the Nation Diaper Bank Network, an organization that works to ensure all families have their basic needs, such as diapers, met.
“Changing tables are important in men’s restrooms because fathers deserve the opportunity to be their best,” said Palmer.
Thanks to one proactive father and his passion, this movement for equality may spark just the change all fathers need to care for their children.
