I don't know if his directions are accurate - but they certainly made me chuckle!

Giving directions isn’t always easy.

Giving directions isn’t always easy, especially if you’re a local. Because the landmarks that you know by heart won’t always make sense to travelers and tourists.

But you have to give credit where it’s due for the honest attempt.

That’s what’s going on in this cute little video. In what’s described as “A Little Education for You, if you ever get lost in Rural America”, a small child dispenses some advice to get to Bear Creek.

How do you get to Bear Creek?

The video begins as a young country boy recounts his experiences going down to a specific place. He shakes his head and talks about the challenges of getting to his destination.

An off-screen man asks if the boy is referring to Bear Creek and then asks the boy to give directions.

And that’s when the magic happens.

You start with a left turn and then…

The young boy starts his directions by mentioning that you take a left on your way to the creek. He pauses often in the video, as he tries to recount the trip that he clearly took with his family down to the creek.

As he talks, he motions with his hands to demonstrate the twists and turns you take, which follows some good practices for giving directions.

But how far do you go?

In what could be best described as a cute rambling set of directions, the boy adds distance to his directions to Bear Creek. You don’t just take the first left and right turns he describes, he also makes sure to talk about how many miles you drive before you turn.

But as the child goes on, you have to wonder if he is aware of what a mile is? Surely he could be mistaken and Bear Creek is much further away from his house than you might think.

The boy really gets into giving out directions.

As the child continues in his rambling story, he waves his arms side to side. He even nearly knocks over his glass of juice, but manages to catch it in the nick of time.

What’s remarkable about this boy’s talk is how focused he is on being helpful. Even with that yummy looking breakfast right in front of him, he is deadset on helping the off-screen figure get to Bear Creek.

So how do you give better directions?

Obviously it’s easy to tease the video for the unclear directions. Since the cute ramble is half the fun.

But how do you give better directions?

Here are a few tips that might help and are great to teach to kids.

  1. Make sure you have your audience’s attention when you give a direction.
  2. Be clear about what you want your audience to do and when they need to do it.
  3. Ask your audience to repeat the direction back to you to make sure they understand.
  4. Avoid asking questions when you want someone to do something.
  5. Give one direction at a time.
