Johanna is the proud owner of a corgi named Irma. Her dog has always been a little ball of sunshine, and the two of them would do almost anything to keep each other happy.
Corgis are a small breed, but they have big personalities.
The American Kennel Club describes the fun-sized dog as follows:
“At 10 to 12 inches at the shoulder and 27 to 30 pounds, a well-built male Pembroke presents a big dog in a small package. Short but powerful legs, muscular thighs, and a deep chest equip him for a hard day’s work. Built long and low, Pembrokes are surprisingly quick and agile. They can be red, sable, fawn, and black and tan, with or without white markings.
“The Pembroke is a bright, sensitive dog who enjoys playing with his human family and responds well to training. As herders bred to move cattle, they are fearless and independent. They are vigilant watchdogs, with acute senses and a “big dog” bark. Families who can meet their bold but kindly Pembroke’s need for activity and togetherness will never have a more loyal, loving pet.”
These tiny herding breeds are my favorite to watch in agility competitions. Their tiny little legs move so fast, and they really have a blast on the field with their human partners.
Joanna and her family were happy to hear the news of Irma’s pregnancy.
The family could not wait to welcome the new litter of puppies into the world. They took her to the vet to check on their new family members and discovered that Irma was expecting a litter of 7 puppies! It seems like a lot, but it’s actually the average size of a Corgi litter.
It seemed like the pregnancy was going well and the puppies would be delivered with no problem. But when labor hit, Irma started facing some issues. Johanna did not know exactly what was wrong, but she took her furry friend to the vet anyway. She was worried that Irma or the litter could be hurt during delivery.
She was right. Irma needed an emergency C-section to deliver all the puppies. The vet did their best, but none of the puppies made it. Irma and her family were devastated.
Irma was very sad after the miscarriage.
She was grieving the loss of her litter and nothing Johanna did would cheer her up. Irma was preparing herself for motherhood and it was just suddenly ripped away from her. She was really sad for a very long time.
Johanna thought that surrogacy would help her Corgi get through this hard time.
She found a small kitten who had been abandoned and needed a mother. The kitten’s fur even matched Irma’s!
It was a match made in heaven.
Irma stepped into motherhood right away and started caring for the kitten like it was one of her own pups. She didn’t care that the kitten was of a different species, she just saw a baby who needed love and was ready to provide it. She immediately gave the kitten all the love, care, and protection she possibly could give.
The presence of the kitten has made a profound difference in Irma’s life. After the miscarriage, she would sleep all day, hardly ate, and did not find interest in her toys. After finding a baby to care for, her instincts kicked in and she started raising the kitten like a pup.
Irma feeds the kitten, keeps it warm, and snuggles it at night.
Irma is showing that love knows no boundaries and Johanna is happy to have helped her best friend find herself again. She is an amazing corgi, and I know she will be an amazing mother for the kitten.
Who knows? Maybe we can see the kitten in the next agility competition.
