The police have come under severe scrutiny in the wake of recent (and countless prior) events.
Months after the George Floyd incident, Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old black male, was tragically paralyzed after being shot by police numerous times in the back.
These days, more and more Americans can agree – there are obvious flaws with modern policing.
Although these tragedies absolutely necessitate further examination into the roles and power of the police, most of the people behind the badge are everyday, hardworking Americans.
Despite obvious institutional flaws, the fact remains:
People are people, and police are people, too.
Like anyone, police officers have families, frustrations, and everyday problems.
You may personally know some. Many cops are kind people, at least out of uniform.
The foundations of the current racial tensions in the United States run centuries deep. We certainly live in a more tolerant world than centuries ago, but we clearly have much more work to do.
We must remain vigilant in ensuring a free and fulfilling world for everyone. Cops, who are still working-class Americans, should ideally be proactive in the struggle.
A fun new video of buddy cops “singing” paints officers in a pretty relatable light.
Two cops enter a vehicle and prepare to drive to their next destination. The officer on the right sends out a quick message via radio, then flicks on some tunes.
“Dark Horse” by Katy Perry occupies the airwaves.
Get ready for a masterful lip-syncing display.
The cops bob their heads to the beat. The driver gleefully enters alongside Katy Perry’s vocals, mouthing along to the lyrics.
“I knew you were, you were gonna come to me
And here you are, but you better choose carefully
‘Cause I, I’m capable of anything
Of anything, and everything”
The partner officer sits in silence. She’s probably used to this type of wonderful ridiculousness.
The first officer continues to lip-sync along to the pop hit.
A few verses go by. At this point, he’s lip-syncing emphatically to the chorus.
Moments later, the second officer slides some shades over her eyes.
If you’re familiar with “Dark Horse,” you know what’s coming.
Juicy J chimes in with some vivacious verses.
And so does the officer on the left.
Even cops like Katy Perry and Juicy J!
These buddy cops are just havin’ some fun at work.
The cop continues to lip-sync to Juicy J’s cascading flow.
“She’s a beast, I call her Karma (Come back)
She eat your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer (Woo!)
Be careful, try not to lead her on
Shawty’s heart is on steroids, ’cause her love is so strong”
A few more verses go by before the car arrives at its destination. The first officer flicks the radio off.
The passenger cop’s all smiles. That was a lot of fun.
She raises her eyebrows, letting out a single “Wow.”
Wow is right! That was an exhilarating, musical mini-journey.
Cops are often portrayed as brutish and strict.
Like anybody, some officers love goofing around with their friends.
Are there problems with modern forms of policing? Yes, that’s almost undeniable. Perhaps cops are given too much power and leeway on the job.
Most of these problems are embedded in the institution, itself, but not necessarily with individual officers.
Imagining police officers without uniforms and badges reveals regular, hardworking Americans.
Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
We should see more cop videos like this – or of cops helping people. Unfortunately, media portraying cops as real people takes a backseat to some of the tragic events we’ve witnessed in recent months.
These two officers are essentially regular people. They’re uninhibited and fun-loving, goofing around to get through the workday, much like Jim and Pam in The Office.
And they happen to really love Katy Perry. Say what you will, but she’s released countless chart-topping hits! In fact, she just had a baby with Orlando Bloom.
Make love, not war.
Expressing sympathy towards individuals who happen to be police officers and acknowledging that the modern American police force needs reworking are not mutually exclusive ideas.
Life’s often more nuanced than a simple “us vs. them.”
Of course, focusing on protection and community health remains paramount. Unfortunately, the roles of the police often stray away from those sacred tenets, resulting in tragedy. Frequently, police officers seem to serve the interests of elites over the average citizen.
Hopefully, departments will learn from recent mistakes.
In the meantime, we must remain vigilant in making the world a better place for all. And we should keep these two typical officers in mind. Upon stripping away the badge and uniform, they’re no different than the average person. They seem pretty cool, all things considered.
So what do you think of these officers’ incredible lip-syncing music video? They have fantastic chemistry, comparable to Katy Perry and Juicy J in “Dark Horse.”
