Not everyone loves technology, and it seems like the elderly can even hate it at times.
Who can blame them really? Some phones and devices are complicated, and it seems like as soon as you get used to having one, a newer version comes out and you have to upgrade to it and learn to master it, too. It’s a never-ending cycle.
How much do we need our phones to do?
Why do we need so many apps and tools? Couldn’t we do without most of them? Nobody will argue that phones are major conveniences, but most will agree they can be a little hard for those who aren’t technologically savvy to understand.
One elderly woman was trying to use her phone when it started acting crazy.
Well, most of us would know what was going on, but to her, it seems like it is broken. She just wanted to make a call, when all of a sudden, she hits the camera and she can see herself on the screen. Her granddaughter happened to be nearby.
Grandma can be heard saying:
“Apryl? Why did my phone turn into a mirror?”
Of course, she has the cutest grandma voice ever. You can really hear the concern in her voice. She continues:
“I’m looking at my face and … oh my, look at all these wrinkles. You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Grandma apparently hadn’t looked at herself in the mirror up close in a long while.
She was started to hate her smartphone even more because it was showing her age in more ways than one. Her granddaughter tries to help out. She says:
“It’s just a camera. You probably have it switched over … Take a selfie! You have it in selfie mode, Grandma!”
Grandma seems to be more confused than ever at this point. She has no idea what a selfie is. She says into the camera:
“A selfie? What the heck is a selfie?”
She continues to try to get the phone to do what she wants, but she isn’t having any luck. Finally, she has had it.
She decides that there is nothing smart about this phone and she wants her old one back. She says:
“This is supposed to be a smartphone. It’s not that smart. I want my flip phone back!”
She is clearly under the impression that if something isn’t broken, you shouldn’t fix it, and her old phone was working just fine. Her granddaughter still wants her to try to figure out her new phone. She encourages her to take a selfie. She says;
“Take a picture!”
Grandma just isn’t having it. There is no way she’s using this phone for anything other than phone calls. She isn’t happy with all the wrinkles it shows, and technology is not her strong suit.
She would rather leave it for her granddaughter to figure out.
Apryl says that although her grandmother is a little behind the times, she wouldn’t have her any other way. She and her grandmother spend a lot of time together, and Apryl can’t help but laugh at her sometimes.
She has a lot of patience with her and has tried on more than one occasion to teach her grandmother to use her phone. She’s had no luck, and it seems like Granny will be better off going back to her old phone. At least she understands how to use it and doesn’t have to worry about taking selfies or finding wrinkles she didn’t know she had.
Apryl said:
“She is the cutest grandma in all of Phoenix. She only knows how to make phone calls and even then says her smartphone is only good at deleting stuff.”
We can all relate to how Grandma feels.
Learning how to use a new phone isn’t always easy. Maybe if her grandmother sticks with it, she will get the hang of it. At least she had a granddaughter that cares enough to help.
