Cockatoos are a beautiful species of bird hailing from Australia. According to The Spruce, while they are generally known for the large crests of feathers that adorn their heads, it has also been discovered that hand-feeding baby Cockatoos can lead to an extremely affectionate creature.
In 2008, a bird-lover named Anja decided to get an 8-week-old Cockatoo named Harley. At the time, Anja had no idea that her little bird would go on to become a viral celebrity.
In their Harley the Cockatoo YouTube channel description, Anja describes how she thought long and hard about whether to get a Cockatoo because they have a lot of traits that can be hard to deal with.
She lists a few, noting that the birds “are very loud, make very much dust, a lot of mess, [and] destroy everything they [get] in their beak.”
Despite all the possible problems, Anja, always the avid bird fan, decided to take the plunge with Harley.
Two years ago, Anja began uploading videos of Harley to YouTube, and people immediately fell in love with her huge personality.
The very first video uploaded under the Harley the cockatoo channel has over 3 million views and features the white-feathered fowl singing into a plastic cup.
The 15-second clip showed the bird discovering that her voice became louder when she sang into the cup. She lifts it up and down multiple times, testing her theory.
The video garnered over 3m views and 31k likes, with the top comment (by user Suchomimus65) joking, “dinosaurs have truly left behind an astounding legacy.”
Since then, Anja and the fun-loving Harley have uploaded dozens of other videos, ultimately achieving viral status many times over.
Multiple news media outlets have shared Anja’s videos of Harley, including the Chicago Tribune (who shared a video of the bird dancing in front of a mirror), the Telegraph (who shared a video of her going on a rampage with a cup tower), and the Daily Mail UK (who shared a video of her helping Anja mop the floors).
The pair regularly posts little clips to their Instagram account with almost 1M followers.
Most recently, another video of Harley has been making its rounds on the internet. It features Harley “helping” Anja with the laundry.
