When most people think of a dog saving a person, they think of a muscular animal pulling trapped a person out of wreckage. But it turns out that tiny little dogs like Chihuahuas can save people too, just in different ways.
Bobby Humphrey looks like the kind of guy who would suit a German Shepherd or a similar big dog. But looks can be deceiving.
For many years, Humphrey got kind of dogs that society said he should have. He’d always adopted big ones. But one day, he’d meet a tiny dog that would show him so many great things.
Despite his appearance, Humphrey is a sensitive guy.
He had an incredibly loving marriage for 17 years. But eventually, it broke down.
His divorce, and its emotional journey, had a huge impact on his self-esteem and outlook upon life.
Soon, he sank into a deep, dark depression.
Luckily, his best friend, Connie, was there to help him. But Humphrey kept trying to shut her out. He kept asking to just be left alone.
Eventually, Connie stopped bringing up offers of emotional support.
Shortly after this, she asked Humphrey if he could look after her Chihuahua as she moved home.
Humphrey accepted.
Connie took the dog to Humphrey’s home. Immediately the dog, Lady, started acting differently. She started being really affectionate to Humphrey.
Perhaps she could sense that Humphrey needed love?
Right away, Lady joined Humphry on the couch, settling on his lap.
After a busy day of moving home, Connie came to check up on Humphrey and Lady.
She found something truly shocking when she arrived.
Lady and Humphrey were snuggled together in bed.
Connie picked Lady up to take home. She could tell that Humphrey was getting emotional about Lady leaving.
Connie said that he could come to visit Lady as often as he wanted.
But that wasn’t enough for Humphrey.
He realized that a chihuahua of his own was now essential. There was just something about that breed of dog.
Within a few weeks, Humphrey’s search was over. He had found a perfect chihuahua named Kira. She had been living in squalid conditions. Her previous owners were incredibly neglectful.
Humphrey knew that together, he and Kira could have a great life.
Kira was understandably very afraid at first. She couldn’t just trust Humphrey right away. But over the course of a few months, the dog opened her heart to her new owner.
She realized that he was full of love and would never let her go hungry.
Seeing Kira gaining happiness sparked something deeper inside Humphrey.
He realized that Kira wasn’t the only little dog who needed love.
Humphrey took to the internet to see if there were any other Chihuahuas in need. He hadn’t been online for longer than a few minutes until he heard about two sibling puppies, Harley and Quinn.
They had nowhere to go and were very timid. Humphrey realized that he needed to save them.
But it didn’t stop there. He took in more and more dogs every day.
Eventually, he decided to make his activities formal. He founded the animal rescue group Big Guy, Littles World Sanctuary.
To date, the organization has found and rescued over 30 dogs.
And it was all thanks to Connie’s dog, Lady.
That dog has given Humphrey an entirely new lease on life. Instead of feeling lost and aimless, he has a new drive, and it sure is heartwarming!
