Ask a person what cats are like and the answer would probably be something along the lines of sass and overall personality. We can blame it on the Ancient Egyptians for holding cats in such high esteem, or we can just shrug and accept that cats will always lord it over everyone and the least we can do is accept it and live with it.
Cats are amazing. They’re sweet, beautiful, and irresistible.
Despite the funny cat jokes and usual quips on their personalities, most cats are actually extremely vulnerable – especially stray cats and shelter cats. Cat lover or not, you can’t deny that the soft meowing of an abandoned cat begging to be fed will tug on your heartstrings and compel you to do act.
Erin Merryn and Bailey met when the former was in college. Obviously, pets in dorm rooms are a no-no but Erin couldn’t resist. She couldn’t keep it a secret for long though. Eventually, the school found out and gave her 48 hours to get the cat out of the dorms. Unfortunately, her parents were firm about not letting Bailey stay in their home, either as they already had two cats and a dog.
Erin didn’t want to get rid of Bailey but she knew she had to find a nice home for the cat. She thought hard and soon enough, found an elderly woman who could adopt Bailey. The woman lived in the neighborhood Erin grew up in so it seemed perfect. It was a seemingly good arrangement but she was heartbroken about not being able to keep Bailey.
As she drove back to school, she was in tears.
“This kitten had a personality like none other than any other cat I’ve ever met,” shared Erin.
Unexpectedly, Erin got a call from the elderly woman who offered to adopt Bailey. To Erin’s surprise, the woman told her she couldn’t keep Bailey.
Erin immediately went to pick up the cat.
The news came at the right time too, as Erin had a month off from school to figure out what to do about the situation. She told her parents what happened and assured them she’d use her time off to find a new home for Bailey.
Erin may have told her folks she was going to find another home for Bailey but she was secretly hoping her month off would be enough time for Bailey to win them over.
Initially, Erin’s folks weren’t too happy with the arrangement but everything turned out for the best – she got to keep Bailey.
The cat became such a huge part of Erin’s life that even her kids have grown to love him.
When Erin gave birth to her first child, she recalls how Bailey was so well-behaved around the baby.
“He kind of got spooked a little when he saw the baby move.”
But other than that, Bailey was nothing but sweet and gentle. There was no pouncing or loud meowing. In fact, Erin shares how Bailey would often walk up and sort of check on the baby.
It didn’t take long before Bailey was smitten with Erin’s baby.
“Slowly and surely, he just fell in love with her.”
The sweet cat would snuggle with the baby, curl up beside her, and just keep her company and play with her. It wasn’t like anything Erin ever imagined she’d be able to share with Bailey.
As her family grew, so did Bailey’s love for all of them.
The cat would let the kids feed him, bathe him, and play with him. Bailey knew they loved him, and he wanted them to feel that he too thought the world of them.
It was amazing how Bailey became more than a pet – he acted like a doting big brother to Erin’s daughters. Bailey may not have been a kitten when Erin’s girls first met him but they grew to love him and that was all that mattered.
