If you asked Cassadee Pope if she ever thought she’d be the first female winner of the voice, she might not have said “yes” since she had a case of the jitters.
Though Pope had been performing with various bands since she was 13, she had just begun embarking on a solo career.
When she first appeared on the show, the American singer and songwriter and just went on a hiatus with her pop-rock band Hey Monday. She was their lead singer and released one studio album and three EPs with the band.
Starting a solo career in early 2012 was a big and scary step for her.
“It’s a nervous-ready feeling,” she said just before her audition. “I’m definitely at a point in my life where I’m ready to make it on my own. I’m most nervous about playing in front of these four incredible artists who I respect so much.”
Pope’s audition song for The Voice was a rendition the song “Torn” made famous my Australian singer-songwriter, model and actress Natalie Imbruglia and was written by the band Ednaswap, a rock band from Los Angeles that played in the mid-90s.
Their hit song was covered by many other artists besides Imbruglia, including Lis Sørensen, Trine Rein, Tori Amos, Hands Like Houses, and One Direction.
Pope started out with a beautiful soft voice then came in strong causing judges Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, and Blake Shelton to immediately hit their buzzers and turn around.
“That was well executed,” Aguilera told Pope. “You can kind of do it all.”
Judge Cee Le Green, however, took a little bit more convincing, but eventually also hit his buzzer and spun his chair around.
“You reacted physically, but you didn’t falter,” Levine said to Pope after all of the judges turned around.
Though all four of the judges argued over who would get to be her coach, in the end, Pope chose Shelton. Not only did Pope go on to win that season of The Voice on Dec. 18, 2012, but Pope went on to a enjoy a successful solo career.
She released her debut solo country album, Frame by Frame, in October 2013 and went on to win a Grammy nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for her duet of “Think of You” with Chris Young.
