This only takes a few seconds, but really is a brilliant space saver.

A lot of us have been doing laundry for so long that we go into auto-pilot during the chore. But did you know that there’s actually a “right way” to fold socks?

While it might not be a simple match and tuck method – it does turn your paired socks into cute little squares that can be easily organized (say goodbye to lumps). This tutorial might just help put a new spin on the way you do laundry.

Let’s get one thing out of the way first. There’s actually no “right way” to fold your laundry (it’s just part of the video’s clever title).

We all go about this mundane task in our own ways. Likely, you do what was taught to you – by whoever did your laundry (thanks, Mom!). It’s all about personal preference.

However, sometimes it’s nice to switch things up a bit. And who doesn’t like a little more organization in their life?

Interestingly enough, humans have been wearing socks for longer than you may realize.

According to SockShop:

“The oldest known pair of socks is 1,600 years old and was excavated at the end of the 19th century from the burial grounds of ancient Oxyrhynchus, a Greek colony on the Nile in central Egypt. The socks are made from red wool and have split toes for wearing with sandals.”

But they’re actually believed to be a lot older than that. Here’s another fun fact from SockShop.

“Experts believe that the first socks were worn by cavemen, who wrapped animal skins around their feet and tied them at the ankle. Animal furs were sometimes used for extra warmth.”

Socks have come a long way in design, that’s for sure. This brilliant method seems like it would work for your longer ones, and not the shorter styles. This is perfect timing because the cooler weather is on its way.

If you’re tired of losing your socks too – it will help keep them nicely paired. The technique requires several folds that help ensure one’s not ditching the other.

Ready to get folding? Okay, here’s what you gotta do.

The person in the video starts by laying one sock down. She then lays its match on top in the opposite direction (so they’re crossing).

This is where you have to watch closely to see all the steps.

The bottom sock-end gets folded towards the center and gently tucked underneath.

Then the other sides get folded in as well – and they too get tucked into openings. In the end, it looks just like a neat little package.

While it seems like there might be more steps than a lot of people take, realistically, it only took the demonstrater 12 seconds to complete the method.

In the video, they show how organized it can make your socks look when put away. Just like pretty stackable squares! I don’t know about you, but I’ve never had a sock drawer look this nice (and I’m not opposed to having one).

This technique has been watched more than 8.7 million times. One viewer pointed out how it’s even a space-saver.

“I saved so much space folding this way instead of just rolling the ends and tossing them into the drawer higgledy-piggledy, I fit two drawers worth of socks into one! I have 67 pairs of socks. it took a really long time.”

Another person had to admit:

“I’d never thought id say this, but this is the best thing ever!”
