Do you hold your breath when the officiant says “speak now or forever hold your peace” during a wedding ceremony? Well, it turns out you have a right to be nervous. Apparently, more weddings are interrupted than most people realize, according to this Quora thread.
In perhaps one of the most savage stories, the bride herself was the one who spoke up, creating quite a humiliating scene for her cheating fiancé.
Alas, there aren’t many people feeling bad for him.
Bride Casey received some disturbing text messages the night before her wedding. It turns out her groom-to-be, who she calls “Alex” in her story to maintain his privacy, had been cheating on her with another woman in the months leading up to their wedding.
Casey was with hanging out with her best friends in a fancy hotel room when her phone started buzzing from across the room. But the texts weren’t best wishes for her wedding – they were a series of screenshots from a number she didn’t recognize. The accompanying message simply said, “I wouldn’t marry him. Will you?”
“The screenshots were of conversations between my husband-to-be and another woman. Loads of them, including selfies of the pair. She was the opposite of me. I’m blonde and fair, and this unknown woman had dark hair and olive skin.
The texts were dated from months to only days before. My brain simply could not compute WTF was going on. There was no questioning the legitimacy of these messages. I just knew.”
But her family and friends had already traveled to be at the wedding the next day and Casey couldn’t bring herself to cancel it. Of course, she eventually realized that she also couldn’t marry Alex, so she concocted a plan.
“I didn’t sleep a wink and when dawn finally broke I awoke the girls and told them my decision – I was going to go ahead with the wedding as expected, and ‘out’ him in front of our friends and family.”
As Casey walked down the aisle, she didn’t have a smile on her face.
She dreaded what she had to do next. When she got to the altar, she made the announcement:
“There will be no wedding today. It seems Alex is not who I thought he was.”
This obviously sent a shock wave throughout the audience who were expecting to see a beautiful ceremony. Instead, they watched the groom try to reconnect with the bride to no avail as she read each and every text message she had received the night before.
“With each word, more color left Alex’s face. I let my weeping eyes rise and meet his, and he had not one thing to say. He stalked out of the church with his best man trailing behind him. His family looked on, horrified.”
But the bride hadn’t done this just to ruin everyone’s day. After the drama was over and her groom left in humiliation, she invited her guests to their reception to have a party.
“I love all of you and as horrible as this is I’m glad you all are here. There will not be a wedding reception today, but instead, there will be a celebration of honesty, finding true love and following your heart even when it hurts.”
While there was awkward applause at first, some guests cheered. According to one of the guests on Quora, everyone except the groom, his brother, and two friends attended the reception and danced the night away.
“It was certainly not the wedding day I had planned but to our credit, it was one hell of a party.”
