Giselle, a tiny kitten from Massachusetts, has taken the internet by storm with her massive cuteness! Her new adopted cat mom, Alyssa, has affectionately named her Potato because of her little stumpy limbs and her short little body.
As of this moment, Potato’s Instagram account @realstumpycat has over 105,000 followers that love and adore her. She’s the subject of a quite a few viral videos and news stories from various outlets and blogs online. People cannot get enough of this lovable little potato cat.
Potato’s start
Life wasn’t always this way for Potato. In fact, it was the exact opposite.
Potato’s first family had given up on her when she was still very young. The family couldn’t keep up with the medical requirements to properly raise the munchkin cat, so they decided to leave her with the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
When Alyssa, the manager of the MSPCA, first saw Potato, she wasn’t immediately sure what to do. The small kitten was in really bad shape. However, despite her initial hesitation, Alyssa quickly jumped into action and took the kitten under her care in her own home.
“There was just that internal, like, ‘I can help her, I can do this’” Alyssa recounted to The Dodo.
The process was not an easy one. There were a whole slew of medical concerns with Giselle. She had been matted and had become blind, her limbs and her spine weren’t growing correctly, and her internal organs were not doing so great either.
Add to the fact that this was uncharted territory for Alyssa because, as she puts it, “There’s no manual for bringing your first potato cat home.”
It even got to a point where Potato needed critical surgery just to be able to function normally.
“It was terrifying, like, that was a very scary day for me,” Alyssa remarked.
Potato at home
Thankfully, the operation was a remarkable success. Now, when you see Potato, she is a rambunctious and affectionate bundle of joy, well-loved and cared for by her cat mom Alyssa and her adopted cat siblings.
Olive, Lady, and Jack – the three other older cats in Alyssa’s care – have all grown accustomed to and protective of their new cat sister. And if Potato’s Instagram account is any indication, they seem to get along rather well.
Potato is still completely blind, but just like a lot of things in her life, she has learned to adjust and cope. Thanks to her heightened senses of smell and hearing, she is able to eat, run, and play with her siblings in a relatively healthy fashion. A true testament to what care can do is this cat’s resilience and her mom Alyssa’s devotion.
