Some people (and animals) have the ability to perform incredible feats when faced with adversity. In other cases, love provides the power for one to overcome any obstacle. Such was the case of the bond between a flightless pigeon named Herman and a disabled dog named Lundy.
Herman was rescued in Hilton, New York in 2019. A neurological condition prevents him from being able to fly, and he was found struggling on the sidewalk prior to being rescued.
Wildlife specialists then went on to declare Herman incapable of meaningful, helpful treatment, preparing to euthanize him. Herman’s future was utterly bleak. That is, until Sue Rogers stepped in.
Sue runs The Mia Foundation. Based in Rochester, its goal is to rescue and rehabilitate disabled and handicapped animals. Many animals born with defects are euthanized at birth, as their conditions are deemed too difficult. The Mia Foundation seeks to give unwanted and doubted animals a chance at a fulfilling life, like Herman and Lundy.
The organization’s name originates from a chihuahua named Mia, as inspiration. Mia was born with cleft palate and was set to be euthanized shortly after her birth before Sue stepped in. She passed away in 2012 of pneumonia, but her legacy was used to kick start the Mia Foundation, according to the Foundation’s Facebook page.
Lundy of South Carolina cannot move his hind legs due to a condition known as “swimmer’s syndrome.” His owners eventually brought him to the Mia Foundation. He quickly found a home and soon, a wonderful friend.
Herman and Lundy both exist without the most striking characteristics of their species – in Herman’s case, flight; in Lundy’s case, running and walking. Recently, their budding friendship exploded on social media, touching the hearts of many.
When they were introduced to each other, they immediately hit things off. Rogers posted them together on social media, resulting in thousands of dollars in donations.
According to GoodNewsNetwork.org, Sue went on to say, “I never imagined the pictures of Lundy and Herman would touch so many people! Almost 5 million people in a little over 24 hours!! Their little story is being shared all over the world! And thank you also for the donations coming in.”
The donations will go into providing necessary surgeries to the duo. Multiple people have even offered to adopt Lundy after the procedures.
The Mia Foundation’s Facebook page features information about the organization and contains a variety of photos of Herman and Lundy. Their unique relationship is quite touching.

Herman and Lundy have become stars, with a ton of support coming from social media and across the web. They’ve grown rather close over time and play with each other often.
Neither Herman nor Lundy would be alive without the help of Sue and The Mia Foundation, deeming every life valuable.
Through their companionship, Herman and Lundy have newfound joy in their lives and the ability to overcome an array of obstacles, together.
